REMINDER: South Africa, Johannesburg—Cemetery Records, 1840–2019

There are now more of these records available to work on. In reviewing I see a reminder is needed where the Project Instructions are lacking for the following form:

Application For a Reopen of a Grave

NOTE: Questions regarding this Application form have been asked and answered several times over the course of this project and have been consolidated here.

Yes, these forms should be indexed. However, they often are preceded by an AFFIDAVIT signed by a family member requesting the reopening. This page should NOT be indexed. Mark it No, No Extractable Data. However, you might want to refer to it (or check reference images) if you cannot read the information or need to verify the 4-digit year on the Application form.

Also, there may be TWO names on the Application form. That is because someone is already in that grave and they are adding a body (e.g., a spouse). Only index the current burial; the other person in the grave probably was registered at the time of their burial. This is also where that AFFIDAVIT comes in handy. If there is no Affidavit before or after, the current burial is usually the top name of the two.
