    Karen,

My best guess is: Ipe (with accent)

There are other examples of L, G, S, F which I believe exclude them as being first letter.

Hopefully someone else will concur or have a better idea.

Thank you for your response. My thoughts are that the first letter is Q but haven't been able to decide because I can't find any evidence to confirm this. Hopefully someone from Peru can shed some light on this.

    Many thanks,

    Karen

Another reason I am guessing - Ipe (with accent) - is that two lines above we read:

    image.png

"... yo el ________ cura __ Inter __, previas las informaciones y licencia necesarias..."

    Which roughly translates to English:

"...I the ________ priest __[not sure what Inter means here - ?interim?, ?intermediary?, ?acting?]__, prior information and necessary license..."

Basically the priest that filed the required paperwork for the marriage.

Anyway my best guess is: Ipe for this reason.

The J in his father's name - Juan - is close but note how the loop at bottom is different. It would not surprise me that J, I and Q are written similarly - but I have no specific expertise in Peruvian records of the time.

I am not finding a Peru group at: https://community.familysearch.org/en/categories/gp-groups-en

But I do find a general Latin America group at:

    https://community.familysearch.org/en/group/115-latin-american-genealogy-research

In addition, I do find Quispe - "(Quechua origin) meaning "brilliant" and "crystal." This last name is associated with Peruvian painter Diego Quispe. This is the most common surname in Peru."

As the most common Peruvian surname - this would support your guess of Q - so perhaps it is a abbreviated form of the surname - perhaps the accent is just an abbreviation marker.

so I hope you will find someone to respond more definitively.

Thank you for going to lengths to help me with this. I have found that this name is really common (whatever it is) in the reference pages associated with this batch. The next batch I got has the same name too ... I'm hoping that someone else will respond, but if not I will do the best I can.

    Thank you again.

    Regards,

    Karen
