The field instructions for Childs surname in this project state:

Do not assume a surname from the surnames of others mentioned in the document.

If the surname was not recorded or was written as a variation of the word "unknown," press Ctrl+B to mark this field blank.

Following this instruction I would mark all of the children's surnames (Blank), as no surnames are listed for the children.

Really? I just have always done the surname of the father but I guess I know better now. Thanks for the help!

It does seem strange to not put a surname. I just try to follow the project instructions as carefully as I can.

I also hope that I don't mislead anyone as I am no expert by any means. If you check the #1 birth example there is no surname shown for the child.

Have fun indexing and keep up the good work.

It would also depend on the individual project. There have been projects that will tell you to use the surname of the father if there is none given for the child. So you must always be careful to first read the instructions given with each project as they do vary.

It is usually in the field helps that you find the instruction for surnames and by looking at the examples. The field helps are accessed by clicking on the purple question marks that appear when you click on a field to index.
