What to do when someone shows up as married twice but she was only married once?
Elisabeth Senn - LHBL-Q1P - shows up as married twice. Once to Hans Rudolf Aeberhard and once to no named spouse. However, all her children are actually her and Hans children (she only was married once). It won't let me merge because they are the same people. I tried to add spouse and add him thinking that might work but it just gives me an error message. What do I do? I can't delete the one because the kids are split half on one marriage, half on the other. I appreciate any help thank you!

Also, I believe this is my fault. I've merged many duplicates before but this time forgot to take off the duplicated family at the end. Sorry, I will be more careful in the future.

There is a very efficient way to handle this:
- On her "second" marriage, click add spouse and enter "hans" as a first name, check deceased, then add.
- Merge Hans Rudolf Aeberhard and hans.
I'm not sure what you mean by taking off duplicated families. If you mean detaching or removing duplicate family, then I would suggest that you always merge duplicate relationships instead. In the long run that always works better.

I'm not positive, but I think you can correct this rather easily. Go to the person page of one of the children, say Joseph Aerberhardt, KCG1-QSN. In the Family Members section, under his parents, scroll down to the entry where Joseph is a child under his mother, Elisbeth Senn, LHBL-Q1P, but no father. Click on the edit icon to the right of Joseph's name. In the Parent-Child Relationship screen that opens, click on the "Remove or Replace" icon to the right of Joseph' name. In the pop-up window that opens, click in the box that says you have reviewed the relationships. This will highlight the two buttons at the bottom of the window. Click "Remove Parents." Another pop-up opens. Enter a reason something like "duplicate" and click remove. This should leave the mother, Elisbeth Senn, LHBL-Q1P, but no father, with only one son -- Johannes Aerberhardt, KHJ3-BW7. Repeat the procedure to remove Johannes and the problem should be solved. I hope it works, and best wishes on your family records.

The second marriage is a duplicate of the first marriage. In the second marriage Joseph and Johannes have the same ID as they do in the first family. You can delete the parents from Joseph and Johannes in the second family and state the reason that it is a duplicate relationship. That will erase the second marriage without any error message.

I have attached a PDF file with instructions on how to do this

If you have difficulty following the instructions, I can do it for you

However, I have found it is generally much better to merge relationships if they are correct rather than delete them by adding the temporary spouse then merging.

I keep forgetting to use Gordon's method and use the drawn-out method of removing the relationship of each child who appears under both parents and just the one parent. It often takes me quite some time to detach mutiple children (from under the one parent), using the reason statement, "(Already) positioned under both parents".
A really time-saving suggestion, Gordon.
