Ireland, Dublin—Church Records
The project instructions for this batch say
- "If a surname was recorded for the child but not for the parents, index the surname of the child for both parents. This is an exception to the General Indexing Guidelines and should not be applied to other projects."
If the surname was recorded for the parents and not the child, should you mark the child's surname field blank as in the general indexing instructions?
"Do not assume the surname of an individual based on the surname of someone else, such as a parent or a spouse, unless directed otherwise in the project instructions."
This batch has both. So do you enter the child's surname as "blank" on some"

Hello,
My interpretation of the rules is that if a surname is not listed for the child, you would mark that field blank. The Purple Circle help for the child's surname doesn't mention the bit about "if a surname is entered for the child, but not the parents, enter that name for both parents" - it says "Do not assume a surname from the surnames of others mentioned in the document" so that would seem to mean mark it blank. If you look at the first example in the project instructions, it lists "John of Henry and Mary Marlow". The "answer" doesn't have a name listed for the child, but it does for both parents, which follows this rule.
I hope this helps!
Hilary
