When are attached files (e.g. screenshots) in research discussions removed?
Looking through somewhat older discussions there are many which obviously had some sort of image attached originally (otherwise the post wouldn't make sense) - but the attachment is gone.
A possible reason might be that storage space was to be freed again - assuming that the question has been answered (which then just may lead to incomprehensible discussions).
If that is the case: when are attachments removed - or are there other criteria for removal?

How old are these discussions you are looking at? If they are really old, they may have been imports from the previous discussion board at getsatisfaction.com. That import didn't always do so well. I had several posts from that board show up here as just the image with out any of the accompanying text. I don't remember for sure when Communities opened, but the earliest post I can find here on a quick search is Feb. 2021, which sounds about right. So if the post you are looking at that have clearly lost their images are older than that, I suspect the images were lost during the import.
Otherwise, if they are newer than that, you are going to have to post an example.

I couldn't tell you if there is a policy other than to remove an attachment that violates terms of use or community code of conduct. I had one image removed because it was a clip from Genealogy Bank and it turns out that Genealogy Bank forbids public posting of images from their collection.
But I'm pretty confident that any wholesale removal of images that were posted in getsatisfaction.com would just be an import problem.
An upper level moderator would have to say if anything else is involved.

Yes, just an import issue. It wasn't quite as perfect as we had hoped it would be.

Thanks for the response, @Gordon Collett !
I'm not absolutely sure, but believe they were 2020 - so your explanation would be plausible.
Just to make sure: it then would be just an import problem - no policy to remove attachments, following some sort of criteria - correct?
