"Vermont, St. Albans Border Crossings. 1895-1954": need for clarification
In reviewing information on a relatives, I have noted an immigration source reference for the "Vermont, St. Albans Canadian Border Crossings, 1895-1954" index.
In a review today I found an image attached to the relative's folder, unlike in other searches. The image was a visa or ship's manifest card, showing that the relative had entered the U.S. at Boston, MA on a ship from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. For the unwary searcher, the “Vermont, St. Albans Border Crossings” implies that the individual immigrated at that crossing, in the vast majority of cases a misleading assumption
It might be well to include in the source notes on immigrations from Canada listed under “Vermont, St. Albans Canadian Border Crossings, 1895-1954, that the index covers immigrations at a variety of locations in the “Vermont, St. Albans“ District. During the 1895-1930 period, for example, there would be a very large number of Canadian citizens from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia entering the U.S.at Calais, ME and Boston, MA.
The same problem probably exists for other U.S. immigration district indexes.
