I am needing some help in locating an ancestor in 1860; Cassandra Clark. She is in the 1850 Census with her parents and siblings, and living in Redding, Jackson County, Indiana, and in 1870 she is back at home living with her Dad, step-Mom, and siblings, and is living in Redding, Jackson County, Indiana. Where was she in 1860.

In absence of any better reply, it is not unusual for people to disappear from census records. I speak only from experience with UK census records but I imagine that the principles are the same. There are many possible reasons that include:

    1. Name misspelt either in the original or on transcription.
    2. Age and/or place of birth wrong again either in the original or on transcription.
    3. Record lost
    4. Missed the census by being in transit or simple error.

You cannot do anything about the last two but you can try various options on the first two. One that has worked for me several times is to exclude the surname in the search - just put in the first name, year and place of birth.

    Good luck!

    Regards

Thanks for the reply, and good idea about leaving off the surname when searching,

    Have a blessed day!
