Wrong Place Names on Index Records and Two Datasets for each Village
I found a number of indexed entries that are identified with the wrong village in the FamilySearch Search German database. In investigating this problem another more major problem was discovered.
Please be aware there are two different villages named Bieringen in the Kingdom of Wuerttemberg: Bieringen (OA. Knzelsau) is about 43 miles NNE of Stuttgart on the Jagst River in Jagstkreis and Bieringen (OA. Horb) is about 26 miles SW of Stuttgart on the Neckar River in Schwarzwaldkreis.
Go to the Catalog entry for Bieringen (OA. Knzelsau) - https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/66760 . Copy the number for the first Microfilm - 878230. Go to FamilySearch Search and enter the microfilm number into the "Image Group Number (DGS) or Microfilm Number" field. Doing a search with no search name results with 18,467 hits in the dataset. Notice that although this microfilm is for the village of Bieringen (OA. Knzelsau) many of the entries are incorrectly marked as Bieringen (OA. Horb). Now capture the DGS number for the same microfilm - 8109461 and do the same exercise. Now there are 36,860 hits and the same is true of many of the records with the wrong village name. Checking specific entries between the two searches show that in one dataset the village name is wrong and for the same entry in the other the village name is correct. Conclusion: there are two different datasets for the same microfilm.
- Why are there a two different datasets for the same microfilm?
- Some of the village names are wrong.
Go through the same exercise for the other microfilms in this village set and the same issues exist.
