✨ IMPORTANT UPDATE - 1950 CENSUS ✨
Over the last few weeks, we’ve been reviewing your input about the experience and the work that has been reviewed so far and we’re excited to announce some major changes to the way things are being done!!! This update should happen tomorrow morning (May 24th).
First, Family Review is being simplified! There are quite a few fields that are over 98% accurate from the AI and you have verified that. So, we will no longer be reviewing those. YAH!! As such, the # of fields we are reviewing for Family Review is down to just 12! We hope that this will make it a much more enjoyable experience, one that we will be able to accomplish more quickly.
Second, Header Review, while still an important part of the entire review process, is going to be reviewed in a different manner. It will show as 100% complete, and you will be able to focus on either Name Review or Family Review.
Finally, Name Review will stay as is, we won’t see changes there—we are about at 55% complete! We anticipate being done in late June, and as we work to bring more people into this new experience, we hope to get it done even more quickly!
Rest assured, all the review done to this point is being saved and carried over into the other way that we will be reviewing these records. Nothing is being lost, your reviews have made it so that this next process will go that much faster. Again, thank you for all that you are doing! We’re excited to be able to begin sharing more frequent updates that show significant progress, especially in Family Review!

Name review is very important and there are so many errors to be corrected.

I am working on a batch of birth records. They are all in alphabetical order. Some of the first letters of the names were torn off. Can I go ahead and put the first letter, even though it isn't there? It is obvious what it should be as the names before and after the torn off part continue with the same letter of the alphabet.
The program won't let me put an * or a ? where the missing letter needs to go.

Oh, the * and the ? i got figured out.

I just did a Family Review in Texas, and what I got was a dormitory at Texas A&M :P So it was two solid pages of guys, all in the same place (Dorm #6, it appears). So I didn't have time to go and correct all the names that the computer botched. It's not horrible, but, could be a lot better. So if there were some way to flag this stuff, or make a comment about it (future review, or whatever), would be nice!

Is there a reason the work for the 1950 census does not count toward individual and ward indexing goals?

I have been working with several counties of Kentucky. Many of the records have the place of birth recorded as New York and it should be Kentucky.
In looking at the actual document the abbreviation for place of birth is KY.
Is there some way to make these changes rather than looking at each record?

I hope that you evaluate this process and understand that most of us did not enjoy correcting the computer indexed work. I have indexed for years, but had to force myself to do any of these reviews.
This has taken longer than any other census to index and review because it is a turnoff for us to just review all of this stuff.
Please consider just letting humans do it in 10 years--
I just couldn't get engaged in the process we were left with on this.

I quit working on the census just for that reason. I also want to talk to a human instead of online where the questions aren't really answered.

When you schedule a call you will be connected to a real person in a real meeting where you can share your screen. While working in Family Tree beside your name which is at the top right of your screen there is a question mark within a circle. If you click that the drop down has a blue "Contact Us" at the bottom. Opening that will lead you to this page.
Where you can choose any of the above support options.
Computer indexing is a great improvement. Ancestry.com and Family Search have done a wonderful job of using the computer to index. This project allowed them to analyze the process and improve it. The technicians at Ancestry did a great job of programing the computer to index and Family Search has worked as quickly as possible to check the computers output in order for the technicians to analyze.
Again, Thank-you for your help indexing.

twice now I have been sent the exact same batch I have indexed previously. This time I cannot seam to return the batch. (I know this because I keep a running list of all the batches i have indexed) What's up?

@lew your question showed up in the category of 1950 census which the indexing has already been done by artificial intelligence (AI) & we humans are reviewing, so I am not sure how to direct your question, if you are indexing different batches, please share the batch name and code [XXXX-XXX] so someone more technology experienced can help you better. Thanks and have a great day

You are so correct and it is horrible. When a family warps to the next page after the head of the household surname will end up being being the surname of the family below the wife on the next page. The indexed married status is worthless as it seems most I am seeing are being claimed as widowed when their spouse is alive and will right next to them. For now I just assume all the index info is in error and record what I need without ever looking at the index coding. A lot of young single children are being listed as widowed too.

I hope we get to review the 1960 Census soon!

The 1960 Census won't be available for another 10 years, in 2032!

Most of what is touted as AI these days would be better known as "artificial stupidity."

Why so long before reviewing the 1960.

By law, US Census records are released 72 years after the census is taken. So the 1960 US Census records will not be available until 2032. See https://www.census.gov/history/www/genealogy/decennial_census_records/the_72_year_rule_1.html
