Volunteer efforts
Volunteer efforts that are changes or additions to info need to be standardized and supported by ‘Sources’ please. Numerous times I’ve run into changes made or info added w/ the notation that it’s done by “FamilySearch-Change made by authorized support staff or as part of an update” w/out proof or verification. We certainly appreciate ALL volunteers but please help us researchers out by citing sources.

FYI
I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...
Just in passing ...
So, that we may better, be able to consider ...
Question: Do you mean "Changes", by the User/Patron, of "Volunteer Project"; or, just OTHER Users/Patrons?
Please clarify.
As, there is a significant difference ...
As an side ...
Just in case ...
Regarding the "Volunteer Project" ...
The 'Project', has NOTHING to do, with suppling supporting "Sources", to changes, made through that project.
Please be, aware; and, advised ...
That the "Volunteer Project", is part of 'FamilySearch'; being, a "Project" (and, a "Process"); whereby, "Place Names", that evoke a "Data Error"; because, they are NOT "Standardised", are addressed/corrected.

Improve the accuracy of Family Tree.
You can help by associating a user-entered place with a standard place found on a map.
What you will do:
1. See the user-entered place. Compare it to the places in other life events.
2. Add the standard place that is most similar to what the user entered. What you add will not overwrite or delete the user-entered place. Skip to the next person if you are unsure.
Note: If you prefer, select a country or location below to review places from a specific country or location.

The "Volunteer Project", involves Users/Patrons, working, to HELP "Improve", "Place Names".
There are NO, "Sources"; nor, "Reason Statements".
Hence, the "Contact Name"; being, that of "Volunteer Project", rather than that of an individual User/Patron.
As an aside ...
Perhaps, the the "Contact Name" SHOULD be something like "FamilySearch, Volunteer Project"
[ just a passing thought ... ]
Now ...
That Said ...
Here are some Articles, in the 'FamilySearch" "Blog":
Improve Place-Names
Online Volunteer Opportunity: Help Improve Place-Names

Whereas ...
IF, you are referring, to "Changes" made, by OTHER Users/Patrons' THEN, that is another matter entirely.
And ...
"Sources", are NOT "Mandatory"; and, NOR, should they be ...
Just my thoughts.
I hope, that this may help/assist, somewhat.

A screenshot (or example URLs) of where you are seeing this “FamilySearch-Change made by authorized support staff or as part of an update” notation would be very useful in helping us understand the circumstances relating to instances where this is arising.
Brett is possibly quite correct in his assessment, but the wording does seem to indicate a different kind of action to that expected if this were a "Volunteer Opportunity" issue.

I have only very rarely seen the “FamilySearch-Change made by authorized support staff or as part of an update” statement. FamilySearch really tries to keep their hands off Family Tree. I'm pretty sure that the only time you will see such a notice is when support has been forced to fix something at the request of a user when there is absolutely no way for a user to do this. Something like undoing an incorrect merge that was done in New Family Search. It is not FamilySearch that has any reason or sources to do this, only the user who requested this does and I would view it to be the responsibility of the user to go back and document why he requested the action be taken.
I seem to recall having seen this also when a place name has lost its standard due to an update in the Places database.
An example would be interesting. The last time I saw this was months ago and I certainly can't find that record now.

I accidentally ran across an example today:
I know exactly what this is. In 2015, every time any ordinance work was done, the person's name was automatically added as a Alternate Name. No matter how many times it was already there. The program was updated to stop that behavior.
So this is something new that I have not seen before. You get to it by clicking on "FamilySearch" anywhere you see that as the contributor, as if you were going to send a message. So it is, of course, on everything that was the original import of data when Family Tree was first populated in 2012.
A related update which I have never seen before because I never have had any reason to click on my own name, is what happens when you do:
Instead of being able to send myself a message, I am given the opportunity to go to my Settings.

It's 'Brett'.
Good pick-up ...
'Yes', that is NEW ...
Much better, than it used to be ...
ie. Rather than just a "Contact Name" ...
As such ...
NOW, this 'Post', makes sense ...
It was somewhat confusing, with the use of the 'Word' of "Volunteer" ...
Brett
ps: I just had a look, at a few, after your 'Comment'
