Why can't I edit the question I just wrote?
I tried to edit my post but got this string of nonsense:
{ "Code": 403, "Exception": "You need the Vanilla.Discussions.Edit permission to do that.", "Class": "Gdn_UserException"
The question was about my great-grandfather James Henry Barnes (LR1S-MQJ), no substantive error, just rephrased one of the early paragraphs and now it looks like I was saying he is my great-grandson and not the other way around!
How can I get in to edit it, considering that I am the one who wrote it?
Thanks!

I am not connected with FamilySearch
There are long standing issues with editing on the Vanilla platform selected by FamilySearch for this Community, but in my case the issue has been that the whole post disappears, (sometimes to reappear at a later time).
Maybe you could try clearing your browser history, or try another browser.
Perhaps @Mark McLemore can advise.

FYI
Welcome to the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.
I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...
Just in passing ...
In this Forum ...
Firstly ...
Currently ...
"Technically", we (supposedly) have a "Period" (ie. a 'Window') of ONLY x4 Hours, in which, we have the ability, to "Edit", Our OWN ,'Posts'; and/or, 'Comments'.
Once, that x4 Hour "Period" (ie. a 'Window') HAS expired; then, we can NO LONGER "Edit", Our OWN ,'Posts'; and/or, 'Comments'.
Now ...
That Said ...
Secondly ...
Just thinking out aloud ...
'Looking' at that ERROR 'Message:
"Code": 403, "Exception": "You need the Vanilla.Discussions.Edit permission to do that.", "Class": "Gdn_UserException"
I just wonder ...
As you ONLY just "Joined', this Forum, Today, at 3:35 am (ie. My Local Time); and, posted your OTHER (Original) 'Post', at 4:52 am (ie. My Local Time) ...
That, when, you tried, to "Edit", that OTHER (Original) 'Post' of yours; obviously, PRIOR, to THIS 'Post', at 4:59 am (ie. My Local Time), a 'Window', of LESS than some x7 Minutes (ie. certainly, WITHIN the allotted/allowed "Period" (ie. a 'Window') of x4 Hours) , that the "Vanilla" Platform, on which, this Forum "Operates"; and, 'FamilySearch', had NOT, "Synchronized' together; and, thus the "System", DID NOT "Recognise' you; so that, you could NOT "Edit" your OWN 'Post'.
That is just a passing thought.
Thirdly ...
Again, just thinking out aloud ...
Also, regarding, that aforementioned, x7 Minute "Period" ...
Question:
Had you actually 'Signed Out' of either, this Forum; or. 'FamilySearch'; or BOTH, in the intervening x7 Minutes?
Or, maybe, you were, "Timed Out"; or, Automatically 'Signed Out' ... it happens ...
Because ...
IF, you were, "Timed Out"; or, Automatically 'Signed Out'; THEN, you WOULD be required, to 'Sign In' again.
The reason, that I suggest such, is that, I have noticed, when I have BOTH, my Computer; and, "Mobile" Device (in this case, a Phone), up and running together, that everything is fine with the Computer; but, with the "E-mails", from this Forum, through my "Mobile" Device, the "System", DOES NOT recognise that I am 'Signed In', on my Computer; and, I must 'Sign In', to the Forum, on my "Mobile" Device.
Plus, I have noticed, that when I am working with OTHER Family Members, we must each, "Log Out"; and, "Log (Back) In". again, in this Forum, otherwise, the "System" (ie. in this case, this Forum), DOES NOT recognise, that there HAS been, a "Change" in User/Patron.
ie. NEWLY "Signed In" User/Patron, in 'FamilySearch', CAN be 'Operating' as the PREVIOUS User/Patron in this Forum
Thirdly ...
Of course ...
The problem/issue, may have been due, to a "Glitch", with regard to the "Servers", servicing, either; or, BOTH, the "Vanilla" Platform (ie. this Forum); and, 'FamilySearch'.
It happens ...
I have experienced a number of times; when, the "Server" for the "Vanilla" Platform, was "Down"; and, yet, 'FamilySearch', was just fine.
Whereas ...
Conversely, I have experienced a number of times; when, 'FamilySearch' was Down (or, being, Problematic); and, yet, the "Vanilla" Platform (ie. this Forum), was just fine.
Finally ...
Just my thoughts ...
Now ...
That All Said ...
I know, that this certainly does not help/assist, you; but, I was just (humbly) offering a few, possible, scenarios to consider; especially, for the "Administration", of this Forum.

Thanks Brett. Sounds like there may be a few errors in the software implementation/coordination between modules, and I appreciate your own experiences with how to avoid triggering a glitch. The four-hour limit concerns me more, it sounds as though anything I enter here becomes the intellectual property of this site and I have no further rights to it, not even to correct an error. Does that sound about right?

FYI
It's 'Brett'.
'NO'; 'No'; 'no' ...
Please let me explain ...
Please be, aware; and, advised, that ...
We used to have the ability, to BOTH, "Edit"; and, "Delete", BOTH our, 'Posts'; and, 'Comments', within 'Posts'...
Plus, there was NO 'Time' Limit ... it could be done, Minutes; Hours; Days; Weeks; Months, LATER ...
The REAL Problem/Issue was, that Users/Patrons were doing so; which, sometimes caused problems/issues ...
eg.
[ 1 ]
They submitted a 'Post'; and, that post was 'Answered'/'Responded' - ALL Good.
The submitter, then, "Deleted", the WHOLE 'Post'; which, ALSO "Removed" EVERYTHING ...
Both, 'Post'; and, any subsequent "Comments', GONE ...
[ ie. 'Answers'/'Responses'; &, ANY subsequent "Related" 'Questions'; &, subsequent, 'Answers'/'Responses'... ]
OR ...
[ 2 ]
A User/Patron submitted, a 'Comment', in a 'Post' - ALL Good.
The submitter, of the 'Comment', then, "Deleted", that 'Comment' ...
ANY 'Answers'/'Responses', to that 'Comment', were then 'Out of Context'; as, the 'Comment', was NOT there.
Now ...
That Said ...
The MAJORITY of, 'Posts'; and, 'Comments', can NOT ONLY be helpful to (or, assist) the ORIGINAL Submitter; but, they CAN be, more often than not, ALSO be helpful to (or, assist) OTHER Users/Patrons, in the future.
When such are "Deleted", that is LOST ...
Whereby ...
'Posts'; and, 'Comments', that had been "Deleted", could NO LONGER be either, 'seen'; or, later, referenced, in subsequent, 'Posts'; as, help/assistance.
I can across such, on a number of occasions; and, it was quite frustrating ...
[ ie. Especially, if you wanted to "Reference" such, in a later/subsequent 'Post', to provide help/assistance ... ]
So ...
That Said ...
The "Decision" was made, for "Change", in the Forum, to :
(1) "Remove" the ability, for Users/Patrons, to summarily "Delete" their own, 'Posts'; and, 'Comments'; and,
(2) "Reduce" the 'Time' period, for Users/Patrons, to "Edit", their own, 'Posts'; and, 'Comments'.
..... [ ie. From NO 'Time' Limit, at all, to a Limit (ie. Period), of ONLY x4 Hours ... ]
Basically, the "Changed" was made, for BETTER continuity of, 'Posts', rather than causing problems/issues.
Ah ...
Whereas, in your case, that 'seems' to be a 'Special' one; and, I humbly suggest, that you may have been, just a little too quick, to allow the "System(s)", to "Synchronize" ...
ie.
IF, you had tried, "Editing" your 'Post', just a little LATER (ie. the LESS than x7 Minutes, was just too soon); but, WITHIN, the x4 Hour 'Window', things would have been just fine.
Of course, that is just my thoughts.
I hope, that this may also help/assist, somewhat.
Brett
