Change to family tree contributions

Did I miss a change to this the family tree program that allows other members to add, change, delete and not give credit for information I post on my tree? I enjoyed seeing other member discoveries, but I do not take credit for their photos or facts they have contributed. I prefer not to see their line added into mine or my people deleted.

Thank you for your kindness.

    Welcome to the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.

    I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...

    Just in passing ...

Your question: Did I miss a change to this the family tree program that allows other members to add, change, delete and not give credit for information I post on my tree?

Question: Have you got, "View Details"; as, "Enabled" (ie. "On"), rather than "Disabled" (ie. "OFF")?

    ie.

    Enabled ... ON ...

Shows, the LAST recorded "Action", for a "Detail", including, the 'Date'; and, by 'Whom' ...

    image.png

    Disabled ... OFF ...

Shows, the LAST recorded "Action", for a "Detail"; but, HIDES, the 'Date'; and, by 'Whom' ...

    Just curious ...

I hope, that this may help/assist, somewhat.

    Hi Lisa,

Further to Brett's comments and your question, I wonder if you understand that this is a single family tree, in which we add branches and twigs according to the information we can gather and verify about our personal families. It is not our tree, but the tree.

It is open for anyone to add details and information that they believe to be correct, and so eventually, the part of the tree that you have been working on will interact with someone else's work - hopefully in corroboration.

Sometime, there are instances where information is added that doesn't seem to match our own findings, and in cases like this it is best to contact whoever added the details that you don't understand, and ask for further explanation. There are always options to edit incorrect names and details. I have attached the URL to a Knowledge Article which might be able to help with this

To help minimise these events, be sure to add source details when you make an addition to the tree, and add as many notes as you want to that might help other users see why you have reached your conclusions.

It's a great work and interesting to see how we link to other people who are working to the same end.

Best of luck with your part of the tree.

    Kind regards,

    Barry

One additional thought, if someone merges two individual records, the final merge shows the information being added by the person who did the merge. Not sure why this is so, but have found that it is. I know I would rather not have my name attached to other people's research, too!

"... if someone merges two individual records, the final merge shows the information being added by the person who did the merge. Not sure why this is so, ..."

Just as an example: if there is a profile for a Joe Bloggs, born in X, son of Fred and Mary Bloggs; and another for a Joe Bloggs married to a Jane Smith, and they are merged. The person doing the merge is saying that the son of Fred and Mary married Jane. If someone later claimed that Jane's husband wasn't born in X there would be no point in messaging the person who entered the birth information. It was the person that did the merge that made that assertion.

"I know I would rather not have my name attached to other people's research, too!"

I'm not happy about it either, but I understand why it is done this way. (And the changelog shows who originally entered the information.)

Arguably there is no point messaging anyone about facts. That is because Family Tree is based on published historical records, not opinion or intuition or even private family history.

If you are careful about which person is on the right/left side of the screen, you can preserve the original contributor's name with the event. It's hard to remember to check that with every merge.

Perhaps it would be better to preserve contributors not named "FamilySearch" as the default, no matter who is the merger and mergee.
