How do I attach a source to a person who was on the source document but not indexed into the record
On the Italian civil birth records that I work with, the Mom, Dad and Child have been indexed into the record, and Source Linker creates individual sources for each of them just fine. However, many times a note has later been added in the margin of the document giving marriage information for the Child. It provides the name of the Spouse, marriage date and place.
So, it's easy enough to create a new profile for the Spouse, marry them to the Child, create a marriage event and attach the Child's source record to the marriage relationship. So far, all is well.
However, I would like a source to tag/reference where her name came from. Since she wasn't indexed into the original record, I see no way that Source Linker can help me.
So, if I just attach the Child's source to her, then when Reviewing Attachments, it shows the Detach warnings on everyone in the record. So, that isn't right.
So, I try to make a copy of the Child's source, renaming it like "Spouse entry in Child.....". But, it doesn't let me rename the copy. If I attach the Spouse to the copy of the Child's source, at least there are fewer warnings when Reviewing Attachments.
There has got to be something simple that I'm missing. My primary goal is to allow others to reference the original image so they can check the name and marriage location (they are not always easy to transcribe), yet not make it appears that there is a problem in Source Linker that others will try to "fix".
Here is an example PID that shows this problem. G6PY-PLS

You have a tool for this, called a Source Box. From any of the attached profiles, go to the historical record image. There, click the Source Box button.
In your Source Box you will in effect create a new index record, just one record, for each additional name you want to attach to the tree. So use a summary title such as "Marginal notes on X and Y marriage record". Put all the details in a note.
Once the new Source Box record is ready, go to each of the additional persons' profile pages and in their Sources page at the top Add Source: Attach From Source Box.
This URL will get you Help Center articles about the Source Box: https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/search/family-tree-help?q=source+box

Thanks, @dontiknowyou ! It worked perfectly. I use Source Box a lot, and have created dozens if not hundreds of my own sources. But for some reason in this case I got laser focused into trying to create the source from the indexed record, and needed to take one step back and create the source from the historical record image.
Thanks again!

I have encountered index records where no image is available, and additional names are mentioned in notes. So, I too have wanted to be able to put an index record into the Source Box. In that case, I start the source in the Source Box, then paste in the URL of the index record. It is not elegant but it works.

Hi,
I was working on this person i found book here Sims Land Grants in Nicholas county West Virginia. My question is how do you source this book and have it in sources. I was only able to add as note.

Use your Source Box. Help Center has pages detailing how it works. With a book generally you will use the publication date of the book not the dates of the events mentioned in the book. Once the source is attached to the profile you can add a note to to the source giving the page number(s) and other detail.

@Billie Keaffaber, you don't actually need to involve your Source Box for a one-off citation that you only intend to use on one profile.
Go to Jilson's Sources tab. Click "+Add Source" and choose "Add New Source" (the one with the globe icon).
In another browser tab or window, go to the book page (www.familysearch.org/library/books/idviewer/189236/547) and click the three-nodes ("Share") icon at the top right. Choose "Copy Link" and click the "Copy Page Link" button. (You're citing just the one page from the book, so I think the direct-to-page link is the one that makes sense here. If you were citing multiple pages in the book, you'd use the "Copy Book Link" button.)
Back on Jilson's Sources tab, paste the link into the "Web Page URL" field. Then write a title for the citation -- something like "Sims index to land grants in West Virginia: Jilson Hamrick" -- and fill in the Citation and Notes fields as you see fit. (They're technically optional.)
For the citation, I'd write something like: "Sims index to land grants in West Virginia, by Edgar Barr Sims, West Virginia Auditor. Charleston, West Virginia, 1952. Digital publisher FamilySearch International, found in the FamilySearch Digital Library (FamilySearch.org - Search - Books)." You could go back to the book page and use the "Copy Book Link" button to add here.
For the description/notes, I'd write something like: "Sims Index page 546 indicates a grant of 190 acres and another of 20 acres in Nicholas County to a person named Jilson Hamrick."
Once you have everything filled out to your satisfaction, you can decide whether to check the box for adding the citation to your source box, and then click Save. (Re: the checkbox, I doubt you'll need the citation ever again, but it's much easier to remove things from your box than it is to add them properly after they're created. It's kind of the opposite of salting during cooking.)

This is why I recommend starting the citation in the Source Box.
