"Add Mother" and "Add Father"

This has been suggested before, but I believe it may becoming more necessary. Please create an "Add Mother" and "Add Father" to a child of known parents who were not married.

If "Spouse" is the only title available for those who parent children, we would exclude many children in various non-traditional family-style relationships.

I offer that there needs to be an option for children to add their (male and female) parents without regard to a spousal title, and believe the "Add Mother" and "Add Father" option would accomplish this proposal.

If we are concerned with known lineage for the purposes of identifying families, then we want to include everyone, without title-biases, and allow for the blank spots to appear too--where a single-parent family is the only one known, until we have all the family information, through dna process or historical records that identify specifics.

Thanks for the opportunity to suggest this and for your consideration in making this kind of change.

    @jennifermcclurg

    Jennifer

    Welcome to the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.

    I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...

    Just in passing ...

Maybe, I misunderstand, what you are getting at ...

    But ...

    That Saud ...

You possibly, may NOT, understand HOW, the "Family Tree" Part, of 'FamilySearch', works ...

Specifically, with "ADDING" Parents, to a Child ...

Regardless, if those Parents, were "Married" or not ...

IF, one has a Child; where, NO Parents, have been recorded; THEN, if known, one CAN certainly ALREADY "Add" either, BOTH Parents; and/or, just a SINGLE Parent (if ONLY One is Known).

    And, most importantly ...

There DOES NOT, have to be, an "Event", of "Marriage"; or, even, "Lived Together", if there has NOT been such; as, the "Event", the CAN be left "Blank".

    Furthermore ...

The "Family Tree" Part, of 'FamilySearch', even allows for SAME "Gender" Couples/Relationships; where, Children, CAN be "Added", to those Couple/Relationships.

There is NO bias, in the "Family Tree" Part, of 'FamilySearch', with regard to, "Unmarried" Parents; nor, "Single" Parents; nor, SAME "Gender" Parents; nor, anything of the sort, with regard to including one's "Ancestral" Lines.

    So ...

    That Said ...

I would humbly suggest, that your suggested enhancement, ALREADY exists, in the "Family Tree" Part, of 'FamilySearch'.

I hope, that this may help/assist, somewhat.

    Brett

ps: IF, I misunderstand; THEN, I apologise; and, please explain/clarify ...

    .

Like Brett, I'm puzzled: what's wrong with the "Add Parent" button that's at the top of the Parents and Siblings column of the Family Members section? Why do you want it divided into mother and father?

Perhaps it would have been better for your suggestion to have been to have the ability to remove the "Add Spouse" option in cases where the child's parents did not marry, or the father was unknown.

I believe something similar has been suggested for cases where it is known the individual never had a spouse. This would look better on the page, but there is always the chance that a spouse (and/or) marriage event might be discovered (perhaps by another user) later on. Sometimes couples pretended to be married, but there are some who preferred to keep their marriage a secret.

As has been previously suggested, for now you can go to "Other Information" and add "No Couple Relationships" against the mother (or father) to which the child has been attached. This should clarify the position somewhat.
