Wisconsin Birth Records
The field request on this particular project is to enter the name of the county. I asked previously if we record the city if the county was not listed. It seems like the consensus was "no". I have a clarifying question. The field help says to index the record exactly as recorded. If the city and county were mentioned, do I just leave out the city, write down the county and then not record the state? Or should I also include the state if it was mentioned previously that the city and county are in Wisconsin. Hope that makes sense. Thanks.

If it asks for county then just include the name of the county! Thanks!

Like anne has stated, if it asks for the county in which the event occurred, then we just index the county. In some instances, depending on the project, they ask us for the place the event occurred. In this case, if you click on the purple question mark above the place field, it will tell you to:
- Separate geographical levels of locality, from smallest to largest, with a comma.
This tells us that we should list the place as city, state, or town, county, state. So if only the state was mentioned, you would index the state. If the city and state were mentioned you would index both in this instance.
So if it is specific with only asking for the county, then we should only be indexing the county. If county is asked for and it wasn't recorded, you would mark it <blank>.

Thank you that's what I figured, but wanted to be sure.

Regarding Pre- 1907 Wisconsin Birth Records, the Birth County Milwaukee is stamped on certificates -- too many are being marked <blank> ---- Other all-too-common errors happen when indexers are not reading every line of the certificate - Dane, Jeff., Gr Lk and F.D.Lac are all counties - there are 72 counties in Wisconsin - the abbreviations I've listed are for Jefferson, Green Lake and Fond du Lac -- When reviewing this project I am correcting over 90% of what I see

I am confused about this, also. Clarification and your patience is much appreciated!
The Indexing Tool asks for "Birth County." But, the birth certificate only says, "Place of Birth," and it is stamped, "Milwakee," like you said.
But, how do we know that the stamp is the county and not the city of Milwakee? I ask this, because the instructions say to "Do not assume the name of the county from other information in the document..."
So, because I don't know if it's the city or county, then I've been marking blank. But, I came here to ask this question, because if the birth happened in Milwakee, the city, then for sure it happened in Milwakee the county... But, then ... we aren't supposed to "assume the name."
Am I splitting hairs?

Hi @Terry, Natalie, We don't know if Milwaukee is city or county, but because its stamped, I'm pretty certain it is Milwaukee County - besides most births before 1907 were Home Births, even in a wagon on the side of the road😎 - my grandmother was born in 1901 in Germany and told me of traveling in a horse-drawn wagon to the city where they caught the train to get to the steamship in 1907- from there to Ellis Island then by train or wagon to Utah --- Hope you enjoyed my little story and have fun with these records. 😎
