Hello - I am trying to index these records. I wonder if they are Gloucestershire records.

When I search for them through the records, I find a lot correspond with Spitalfields in London. Have I indexed them correctly so far?

I also don't know what columns 4 and 5 refer to>

Any help please? Thank you

Mom's surname for record 1 is Hebert.

Also the surname for the mother on the second record, that first letter is a P. So her last name is Pontardant.

You can see another example of that fancy P in the name Pierre which is the 8th entry.

    Hello,

Yes, you are correct that these records actually belong to a parish in London. However, the instructions tell you to index all entries, even those which fall outside the county so, yes, you would index them. I think I have read previously that they are all sorted before they are published, so should end up in the right category.

Column 4 refers to the parish - La Patente de Soho, which was a parish specifically set up to cater for the large Protestant Huguenot community who had settled in the area after fleeing persecutuion in France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. This Edict had given the Protestants various right in a mainly Catholic country. The church was so named as it was set up under "Letters Patent" granting them the right to worship in their own way - slightly different from the Church of England. I'm not sure you can use this to determine the county, though. Best to leave it blank. I'm not sure what the 5th column is - possibly the name of the minister as the same names are repeated several times. I don't think this needs to be indexed, so it is not relevant to this exercise, even though it may be intereseting to a researcher.

    I hope this helps

    Hilary.

Thank you Hilary - I really appreciate the information. I know these columns 4 and 5 were not to be indexed but did wonder what they related to. And, now I know!

    Excellent help

    Pam
