Joseph Lambert (b. March 1830, France; d. Oct 1890, Ontario County, NY)
RE: Joseph Lambert; born March 1830 in France; settled around 1855 in Oneida County, New York. Year of migration is not yet known, but it is believed he NEVER lived in New York City. It is believed he was born in either Brimont, Marne, Champagne-Ardenne, France or Blamont, Doubs, Franche-Comté, France.
He died 9 Oct 1890 in Phelps, Ontario County, New York, but lived most of his life in Oneida County, New York.
I have found Joseph's Declaration of Intent dated 20-OCT-1856 in Declarations, package 18-24 sect. 1 1854-1866; ("New York, County Naturalization Records, 1791-1980," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9MZ-RNMV?cc=1999177&wc=MDSJ-Y66%3A326203201%2C326528501 : 21 May 2014), Oneida > Petition evidence 1856 pkg 20, no 1-82 > image 97 of 228; Citing multiple County Clerk offices of New York).
There is a Joseph Lambert found in US Naturalization Records Indexes, 1794-1995 for New York > Southern District of New York that shows only his name plus a number 173267, although "Southern District" most likely refers to NYC, rather than around Oneida County, NY.
Where can I find additional information for Joseph, especially to pinpoint his place of birth? Thanks!! ~Carol H

US naturalization records in that time rarely include specifics about the place of birth. New England records sometimes have more location details, but it's rare to find more than the country of birth in New York State.
What religion was the family? Church records may be a good option. While they don't often have specifics that early, occasionally we find a county of birth in the country of origin. And, even better, we often find family members as wedding witnesses or baptismal sponsors (godparents). And having those collateral details can help pinpoint the correct family.
If the family was Roman Catholic, Oneida is part of the Diocese of Syracuse. This list gives details about the earlier churches http://oneida.nygenweb.net/misc/catholic.html

Unfortunately, I don't know the religion although, if I HAD to guess, it would probably be protestant. Thanks for your suggestion and information! ~Carol
