Wisconsin Birth Index - County Field
I've been indexing the Wisconsin Birth Certificates. In many of the batches I've done it asks for the county of birth and county of residence. All the certificates I've encountered so far only include the city, not the county. Should I at least type the city that is listed or leave it blank?

There is nothing on the form to indicate whether the recorder wrote a city name or a county name - and some Wisconsin projects are restricted to certain FS groups so this forum is not always able to help

I don't see that project available for open indexing/review, so I'm guessing this is assigned to a specific group of people only. As a result, other members can't access any batches.
If you haven't already, check your Field Helps and Project Instructions (plus any examples in the instructions for where to look county information.
Usually, if you can't find the information for location, the Field Help will say:
"If the locality was not recorded or was written as a variation of the word "unknown," press Ctrl+B to mark this field blank."

Thank you. I guess I always hesitate to put a blank when there really is information! They are listing the city and state, but not the county. I appreciate the response.

@NicoleAlldredge Hi, are you indexing Wisconsin Pre-1907 Birth Certificates or the Wisconsin Birth Certs 1927-1931? In either case, you need to go to the group forum with questions, but in general, the project instructions say to type what you see for that particular entry line and remember that because a child was born in a county does not always mean the mother lived in the same county

What does "do" mean? Written for Mother's place of birth. Does it mean same as the father's?

@JaniceMoody , Hi, the "do" means ditto. However, if you are indexing Wisconsin Pre-1907 Birth Certificates or the Wisconsin Birth Certs 1927-1931; you need to go to the group forum with questions, but in general, the project instructions say to type what you see for that particular entry line. 😎

If there is not a designation for county, the don't index it as per following Field Helps -
If the county was not recorded or was written as a variation of the word "unknown," press Ctrl+B to mark this field blank.
There are many batches in this project that do not list county of birth and I haven't seen any that list county of mother's residence. Some indexers are mistaking county of reporting person for this or place of mother's birth, but it should not be. Many do have the county listed for birth, usually the name followed by Co. That name should be indexed in this field.
