What does the ) sign mean after a surname of a grantor/grantee on an Index to Land Records page.

If it indicates to combine with information on the subsequent line(s), do I put all given names in the same box on my indexing form or add them on separate lines, leaving blanks for grantees, dates, books, and pages?

    The project instructions # 7 indicates the following:

    • If multiple grantors were listed for a single transaction, index information about each one using separate entries in the data entry area.

    For example on line 1:

    Summer Southwick (grantor)--->Sara Cancross(grantee)-->Book, Page

    Will Southwick-(grantor)--->Sara Cancross(grantee)-->Book, Page

    Silvia Southwick-(grantor)--->Sara Cancross(grantee)-->Book, Page

    For Albert and Caroline:

    Albert Sours -grantor--->Mary Elred (grantee)

    Caroline Sours--grantor-->Mary Elred (grantee)

    There were multiple grantors with a single transaction.

    Hope this answer your question.

    @JeanneHansen

    Treat it like reverse ditto (copy up the Grantee information). Create two entries - one for Albert and one for Caroline with both having the same Grantee information. Leaving the blank space in the Grantee area after Albert and using the bracket (imitated by using vertically stacked parentheses is shorthand for listing that common Grantee (Mary and all that transaction e information) over and over again. This is a construction found for example in the first three entries where all three Grantors each get an entry with the same Grantee information repeated. @Mirevo and @Áine Ní Donnghaile said this in a slightly different way.

    The ) indicates that adjacent names are from the same record. For example, on that page, Albert and Caroline Sours are grantors on the record, with Mary Eldred being the grantee.

    Thanks. So, on the indexing form, do I enter Albert and Caroline on separate lines or combine the two together on the same line? If I do the first, that leaves Albert with no other information on his line. and nothing that connects the two.
