any memories item is physically and electronically only in ONE place.

Visually Speaking - You will see a copy of ALL your items in the gallery (that is what the gallery is - a list of all items)

If you have linked the item to 1 or more albums you will also see the item in the album(s). but it is a single copy of the item. (albums are designed to allow for grouping/catgeorization) but it does NOT represent a duplication of the item in storage.

also note a single Memories item can be set to be a part of any number of albums. (not just one)

but ANYTHING you upload is always shown in your gallery - since, by definition, it is a listing of all items - that is just based on the definition of the gallery.

The fact that an item is displayed in BOTH your gallery and an album - DOES NOT mean that Familysearch is storing two copies of the item. The item is only being stored once - but referenced in any album you link it to - as well as always in the main gallery.

    so

GALLERY is list of all items

ALBUM is list of items (FROM your Gallery) that meet a criteria/grouping

its sort of like the concept of your HOUSE and the ROOMS in your house

your Gallery is the HOUSE and your albums are the ROOMS.

all the items in your house are also in a specific room . . . but the items are not duplicated.

If you take an item out of your house you are also taking it out of a room. It exists only once.

If you delete an item out of your gallery (you will be deleting it from any album it belongs to)

DONT DELETE items from your gallery unless you realy want to remove something totally out of of Memories all together.

deleting it from the gallery removes it from any albums it belongs to

It should be noted that the use of albums are optional, though, You can have an item in your gallery that is not part of any album - though personally I assign every item I have to an album so I can keep them organized.

    Welcome to the "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.

    I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...

    Just in passing ...

"Memories", that one has attached/uploaded, to individuals/persons, DO NOT, have to be two (x2) places.

NONE of the "Memories", that I have attached/uploaded, to individuals/persons, are in "Albums".

Whereas, All of the "Memories", that I have attached/uploaded, to individuals/persons, are in MY "Gallery".

As far as I am aware ...

And, I stand corrected, if I am wrong ...

A "Memory", ONLY appears, in an "Album", IF (&, ONLY if), a User/Patron chooses to place such in an "Album".

    Just my thoughts.

I am uploading my life's story which I already have typed out and it includes documents and pictures - about 150 pages. I want the pages to be in order but that doesn't seem possible in my gallery - but works pretty good in an album. But whatever I put in my album also goes to my gallery. So I put the duplicates from my gallery in my archive - frustrating to have everything doubled. If I try to delete something from one place, it deletes it from the other - got to live with it I guess.

    Thanks for responding Brett!
