What would I use for the reference number on a marriage index? The page is not numbered. Do I use the volume/book number? or do I use the page number in that volume? There is no index in the examples to help me decide.

    Hi @Judith Edwards

Click on the Reference Number field and then on the Field Help icon = the purple question mark. You’ll see much information on that field, including the following first citation, which tells you use the page number if available. The second citation - from the What to Remember section - tells you that for a marriage index, dig into the listing for the individual marriage and use the page number given there. For example, in your first entry for William Hubbard and Josie Wheeler, the Reference Number would be indexed as 328

    From Reference Number Field Help:

If multiple reference numbers are recorded, only type 1 of them in this field based on the following priority:

    1. Page Number
    2. Record or volume number
    3. License or certificate number

Also, from the What To Remember About This Project section.

    • For entries on a marriage index, type the appropriate reference number associated with the entry on the index, not the page number of the index itself.

Thank you John. But the interesting thing is, when I considered the instructions again, I interpreted it to mean that the priority is 1. the page number of the index; 2. the volume number; 3. the license number

That would mean I would use Volume #4 as the reference #

then I see that you interpret it as the page # in Vol 4

So I am still uncertain, but thanks

You're welcome, Judith. Yes, the second citation is specifically on how to interpret indexes. That is your situation.
