Indexing overlay and county
I am reviewing this batch, and have two questions.
1. There is an overlay on the first page of the image. The GIG states:
· If the overlay contains information about a record type being indexed in the project, create a separate record, and index the information in the corresponding fields. . . .
· Do not try to index any information underneath the overlay that may be visible.
The indexer did index the three partial entries under the overlay, in addition to the overlay. Reference image +1 is a repeat of this image, with the overlay folded back.
Since the full page will be indexed from +1, the first page of this current batch would be a duplication. My instinct would be to index only the overlay and the second page. Would that be correct?
2. The county for this record is not indicated, so that field should be marked “blank.” However, a “place of abode” is part of the record which, in most entries, does specify a county. Should that county be indexed?

The indexer does not worry about the reference images when it comes to overlays. You are correct, only the overlay is indexed and the County is blank. This is different from the old program so people probably get a little confused if they were used to the previous instructions.
Place of Abode is not the same as Place of Birth, so the county would not be indexed from that column. Notice on How to Index a Baptism Register (3rd Example), there is an Abode column but it is not used to determine county. I think that is true in at least 2 other examples.

Thank you for your response, Melissa. I will make the necessary corrections for this batch. And thanks for clearing up the abode confusion. This group is so helpful.
