Sharpen Image in Indexing

Is it possible to sharpen a blurry image within indexing? The image I am trying to index is very hard to read. Looks like there was an option at one time, but I do not see it. The User's Guide says: 1. Click the View menu, and click Sharpen.

Under data entry click "show tool bar". Then click on the tools option.

You can adjust brightness and contrast. Most of the time if the image is too blurry I return the batch. Hopefully someone else can see it better. Some have shared that you can get apps to help sharpen images. I have yet to use one.

What I think you are looking at is the old program user guide for indexing. Sharpen is no longer available. I haven't been able to find it anyway :( .

No there is not a sharpen image option within Web Indexing image view. The image vertical toolbar options:

    image.png

    rotate left

    rotate right

Invert (invert writing or background as positive/negative)

    Adjust Image (brighten/contrast)

If the image is too blurry you may want to use Batch> Return Batch (there is no option Return Batch with reason 'image quality'). It would be a nice idea if there were an option to alert Project Admins but there is not - and I doubt they would reimage it because they are probably on to imaging the next Project. In any event - I don't know another way of alerting Project Admins except here in Community - but it would be easier with a dedicated Reindex with Reason option (enabled under Help> Labs menu).

    @HeddellJim

I'm curious to see how bad it is. Would you please share your Batch Code ([MXXX-XXX} from the end of the batch name?

    Thanks.

Thank you for your reply. We already did the batch the best we could and summitted it. I do not see how to find the batch code now that it's submitted. Is there some way to still get it?

No. But I'm sure there will be another troublesome batch. When a batch is open click on Help and then Share Batch, and it will give you the Batch Code (also it is at the end of the batch name).

Please let me know if you come across another example like that one.

Now have another blurry batch: M32K-K6T, US Enlisted and Officer Muster Rolls and Rosters, 1916-1939 [Part P]

I tried that batch HeddellJim. With the sharpening device I brightened it slightly. That did seem to help a bit. You might try playing with that and the negative image version to see if those help you.

What is the "sharpening device" and how do we access it?

annewandering is referring to the adjust image: brighten tool (half sun icon) and the invert tool (page with diagonal icon) - found in the image vertical toolbar (see above post). There is no 'sharpen' tool ...

Sorry for the confusion! genthusiast explained how to get to the tools you needed so did not want to repeat them. The sharpening tools are the adjust image tools and the invert tool.

There is also an article in the Help Center for indexing a blurry or damaged record.

    https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/article/how-do-i-index-a-blurry-or-damaged-record

Regarding how to alert project admins, this article also says, "If multiple indexers return the same batch, the project management team reviews the image."

Please be assured that batches that are returned multiple times are flagged, and those who work on the project management team will review them.
