Feature Request: Specific Tree Search

Hello and thank you for providing this website!

So many times I need to simply search my family tree, which is growing quite large now, and the only option seems to be to search the entire database – and the search result returns are not all that accurate, regardless of the filter settings. In other words, the search is not intelligent, paying little regard to specific names or dates, even when selecting "exact" returns.

Kind regards,

Hugh Wyatt

Thanks a lot for proposing this feature! Sometimes also for me is really difficult to search a person only into my family tree

This idea has come up a lot through the years. Hope you don't mind if I just quote myself:

This request to be able to search just a part of Family Tree has been posted on a regular basis, probably within days of Family Tree opening in the spring of 2012. The discussion among users has always bogged down on the first step: How do you define "my tree"?

    Is it:

    • You and your parents?
    • You and your direct ancestors back 4, 10, 50, 100, or unlimited generations?
    • All of the above plus their children?
    • All of the above plus their descendants forward 4, 10, 50, 100, or unlimited generations?
    • All of the above plus their spouses?
    • All of the above plus the ancestors of those spouses and the descendants of those spouses?
    • All of the above plus the same set of your spouses' relations?
    • All of the above plus all possible duplicates of them?
    • Only people you have marked as "this person is part of 'my tree'"? (You can do this now with your Following list.)
    • All people in the database for whom View My Relationship would show a relationship with its current 15 generation up and down limit?
    • All people in the database for whom View My Relationship would show a relationship but with no limit on number of generations?
    • All people in the database for whom View My Relationship would show a relationship but with no limit on number of generations and all their possible duplicates?
    • All people in the database for whom View My Relationship would show a relationship but with no limit on number of generations and all their possible duplicates, and all those people's spouses, and everyone with whom View My Relationship would show a relationship to those spouses?

If the section of Family Tree you are working in (not "my tree") is quite large it is almost certain to hook into the entire database one way or another. If not, then there must be duplicates you have not found and merged your entries with.
