Improvements in Temple page filters
I've been thinking about the following posts and decided to consolidate them into one request and add a couple of minor additional items
- https://community.familysearch.org/en/discussion/117226/shared-with-temple-filter
- https://community.familysearch.org/en/discussion/115792/add-deselect-all-clear-button-in-filter-by-ordinance
- https://community.familysearch.org/en/discussion/115794/feedback-being-able-to-select-perform-next-and-not-printed-filters
- https://community.familysearch.org/en/discussion/comment/430268#Comment_430268
Could the filters for the temple reservation pages please be expanded and modified to have this full set (Photoshop mockup):
It should be the same in all three lists, My Reservations, Shared with Group, Shared with Temple, for consistency even if not all buttons would apply on all lists. For example, the two shared lists will never have any 90 Day reservations.
The View section should act just like the Filter by Ordinance section in that one should be able to choose any of the buttons in any combination even though, again, not all combinations would make sense and several combinations would be equivalent to just clicking "All." "Clear" would uncheck all buttons in its field and "All" would check all the buttons.
These additions would give additional flexibility to make the filters most effective.

YES, PLEASE!!
Also, please add filters for PLACE and DATE of RESERVATION. I have many, many names shared with the temple. I want to do the ones first that have been there the longest. However, the sort by date reserved does not work well or only works on the current page. The filter could be by year or year and month.
Also: PLEASE add a filter for relationship line!! e.g. which grandparent line (including spouses' grandparents).

I have kind of backed off giving feedback as much as I used to give, but at RootsTech 2023 Craig Miller said feedback is the best and to keep it coming. One thing I still really want is better filters and on more pages (the temple list filter). For example, you cannot use it on the completed list at all, but I would like to be able to quickly see the number of a certain type of ordinance I did at a certain temple on a certain day so I'd like a filter on that list too. Even just exactly the same one that is on the reservations and shared list would be better than none, but it would be nice to be able to filter by temple too.
I still wish there was a CLEAR button on the ordinances filter (per Gordon's example above) so I did not have to always deselect everything except for the one ordinance I want to find.
I still stand by comments I made in another thread about other ways to improve the filters too.
My previous conversation was closed but can be found here: https://community.familysearch.org/en/discussion/115794/feedback-being-able-to-select-perform-next-and-not-printed-filters
One of my ideas was that it needs to be possible to select multiple filters where currently only one can be selected in the top section. Specifically a big thing that would impact my life is if I could select "perform next" and "not printed" at the same time to ensure I get a list of a certain ordinance type that is ready to be done and also not printed yet.

more filters for the completed list would be most appreciated; especially, for me, a name search.

SUGGESTIONS:
Yes, please add a SEX filter to all temple name lists!
Please make all temple name lists have the same filter & sort functions (including the completed list), including on the mobile app. (I notice that the shared with temple list on the app does have a SEX filter!)
Three additional filters would really enable much easier management of our reserved names, group names and shared with temple names. Especially with the addition of family groups, we need to be able to better identify relevant and 'oldest reserved' names from My Reservations and Shared with Temple to move into the family groups.
1) FAMILY LINES: HIGHEST HIGHEST PRIORITY!! This filter would solve the problem of trying to find names from a specific family line in the temple lists. It could also have just one button on the filter menu. This filter would list the family surnames of the grandparents for the user and for their spouse -- total 4 surnames. This filter needs to be on ALL temple names lists. For example, when a parent, cousin or aunt asks me for family names, I have to click each name on the list (reservations, group, temple) and then click the Relationship icon to see the name's family line. Since the computer can create these relationship trees, it would seem that the computer should also be able to identify the surnames of grandparents and provide them as a drop-down filter. Each user would have their own unique drop-down.
2) RESERVATION DATE: Since the sort by Reservation Date does not function well (across pages AND within pages), it is difficult to find the oldest names on all the lists. A RESERVATION DATE drop-down filter showing the following would be very helpful: 90-days (as mentioned above), and each calendar year in the list. There should also still be a sort by Reservation Date (e.g. to sort last year's names).
3) LOCATION (of person's birth): This filter would solve the problem of not being able to find people from the same areas. Filtering by birth location would help to find family lines, see related people in the lists, find siblings for sealings, etc. This filter could be just one button on the filter menu and work like the location filter on Search Records, where the countries show up first. In the US, then states show up, then counties. Then we could search for people from a specific area.

We could use a little clarification:
- From your perspective, why do you feel it is important to find names from a specific family line in the temple list.?
- There is the ability to sort reservations dates or expiration dates. What is the additional benefit of adding a filter?
- Can you explain what you meant when you wrote, " Since the sort by Reservation Date does not function well (across pages AND within pages), it is difficult to find the oldest names on all the lists."
- When performing ordinances how do you feel searching for people from a specific area helps you find the person you want in your temple reservation list?
Providing this information would really help the engineers understand what is needed and why.
Thank you.

Hi, thanks for asking. I know FamilySearch wants user feedback.
1) FAMILY LINE Filter:
I actively share names with the temple AND have several family groups. This seems to be a common situation for FS users. For example, I have one for my father's family where we put names from his family line for family members to do. This seems to be one of the purposes of the family groups' temple feature. I also have one for my mother's family, one for my husband's father's family and one for his mother's family. So I have FOUR main family groups based on our four main family lines. I also have many names that I have shared with the temple.
Here are a few examples of when having a FAMILY line filter would help:
a) To keep a variety of ordinances available in each family group, I need to find family line names in the Shared with Temple list to share with the respective family group.
b) Family members reach out to me and ask for a specific ordinance for that family line (if it is not in the family group), e.g. female initiatory or male baptisms. So I need to find names in the Shared Temple list to share with the family group for my relative. (We know that Ordinance Ready will provide names, but we often want to do the work for specific family lines that family members have submitted. For example, my husband's step-sister only shares ONE of his two family lines so we would filter just for that family name.)
c) When family gets together, eg. at a reunion, especially an extended family, e.g. cousins on one side of my family, we want to go to the temple and do family names for our specific shared family line (e.g. we share a grandfather's line), especially baptisms with our youth. So we need to find names in the Shared Temple list to unshare and add to the Family Group or print for our family members.
However, when I go to SHARED WITH TEMPLE and try to find names for that family line, there seems to be no way to filter, for example, just for names on my grandfather's line. This creates the problem that I have to go name by name on my Shared with Temple list to find names on that family line.
So, in the example of female initiatories, I can filter for PERFORM Next, and then for Initiatories. I can then sort (would prefer to filter!) on SEX. Now I have a list of over 500 female initiatories waiting to be done. However, now I have to go name by name and 1) click on the name to open the person card, 2) click on the Find Relationship icon (where I can see the family line - so I'm sure FS could be programmed to filter by family line), 3) click on the return arrow, and 4) click off the name. It takes me FOUR clicks to determine whether a name is on my father's line.
The FAMILY LINE filter would be helpful in My Reservations list. It would be helpful in the Family Group lists to ensure that names are in the right family group. Based on comments, I think it would also be helpful for many to have this filter also in the Completed List.
When the filter is clicked (like the ones in Sources), it would 4 surname options: my 2 grandfathers' surnames and my husband's 2 grandfathers' surnames. You could add an option to enter an ID number to further narrow to a different ancestor's lines.
It would be a great blessing to have this filter!
2) RESERVATION DATE (or DATE EXPIRES) filter:
The challenge with the sorting by the current RESERVATION DATE is that it doesn't work well, especially when the names extend on to multiple pages. In the example above of the female initiatories, when I sort by RESERVATION DATE, it most often only sorts the names on that page -- not from the entire available list. Even on that page the sorting does not always work. The same thing happens with DATE EXPIRES. So I end up scrolling through pages anyway trying to find the earliest reservation date.
Here are two examples of inaccurate sorting that are from on the SAME page (!):
A RESERVATION DATE (and/or DATE EXPIRES) filter could help us narrow down our search. For example, in the SEARCH RECORDS filters, you can select BIRTH and have the option for BIRTH YEAR (Range) by decade. This would be an amazing way to filter reservation dates or date expires -- simply based on year or even month and year!!! Or maybe it could simply filter to the oldest year in the list. And then sort (accurately).
3) LOCATION FILTER:
My third suggestion would also help me provide names from shared with the temple to my family groups because then I could filter for a specific "birth" or "residence" locations to find family names. For example:
a) My husband's father's family is almost entirely from South Carolina. If I could filter to only South Carolina, then I can filter for PERFORM NEXT and a specific ordinance, it would be SO much easier to share names with my family groups. (especially when combined with SEX and RESERVATION DATE filter).
b) When we (or other family members) are traveling, especially on a family history trip, we could search the Shared with Temple list for family names from that area, get to know these people better and do the work in a nearby temple.
c) If I am trying to do the work for a specific person or family that I have shared with the temple, I don't always remember middle names or might not type the name correctly. Yet, I know the location. (It would be great if the search function would find results that have two names, e.g. James Bartles, even though his middle name is not included in the search).
d) Doing work for families - by filtering to a specific location in my list, e.g. Fairfield, South Carolina, I can find people who were born (or had some event or resided) in that place and would likely be from the same extended family, including spouses, grandchildren, etc. This would help me to do the work for specific family, especially when I have spent significant time doing the research on that family.
The LOCATION filter could also function like the "BIRTH" filter for in SEARCH RECORDS. The options are generated by the places in the current list. This filter would be so useful in all the temple lists!
Thank you for your consideration of these three temple list filters. These would be great time savers, enable us to better connect with living and deceased relatives, and more easily share our work with our family members.
If you have more questions, please just let me know.

I agree completely with Julie Melville Hite. Her explanation of the need is succinct and very much on target. These filters are essential in being able to sort ordinances by relevancy to the specific situation.

@Julie Melville Hite Just one clarification about your request for a reservation or expiration date filter:
The examples you gave were clearly from the Shared with Temple list. That list only shows the "Shared" date; it doesn't show the reservation or expiration date. You claimed that the sorting was inaccurate, but I'm pretty sure that the sorting was absolutely correct. If you ask it to sort by expiration date ascending, it sorts exactly the way you asked for.
The problem -- and it is certainly a problem -- is that the field being used as the sort key is not shown. That is quite confusing. Based on what we can see (just the name and the Shared date), a sort by reservation or expiration date seems almost random. If we are given the option to sort by reservation or expiration date, then those dates should be shown on each row. If it's really important to show the Shared date, then we should be able to sort by that date. But the current sort options let us sort by fields we can't see, and won't let us sort by the field we can see -- that's not very useful.

Just checking to see if there is any progress on the filtering ideas above:
1) Family Line
2) Reservation Date/Expiration Date (AND have these dates show!!)
3) Location
If these filters are of interest to you (readers), please like the comments above! Thanks!

Just checking again to see if FS Techs are following this thread.
Improved filtering is very critically needed, especially now that we can work with family groups (on different lines!).

A counterpoint to all the enthusiasm for more filters:
The filtering on Temple reservation lists is already some of the most complex in FamilySearch. Adding more options creates a confusing plentitude of choices. Every option that is added takes more screen space (a definite negative, particularly on smaller screens), and increases the cognitive load for every user.
Personally, I don't see sufficient benefit in the latest round of proposed additions to outweigh these negatives.

I have no opinion regarding the addition of filters, but my biggest point of feedback would be the ability to select multiple filter options in "View" and "Sort." For example, in the "View" I want to be able to select "Not Printed" AND "Perform Next." If I have these two filters selected then chose to select "Printed," then "Not Printed" should become unselected with "Perform Next" and "Printed" now selected.
From "Sort," I may want to choose "Date Reserved" AND "Last Name" (and maybe even "Sex," that's three filters I cannot choose at the same time but would make things a lot easier for me and a lot of other people).

I do appreciate the complexity of programming filtering and the concerns for screen space, especially for small screens. Currently, some filters are available on phones are not on computers (e.g. SEX). Maybe have fewer filters for smaller screens. Also, on the computer, the filter for reservation list and temple lists have blank space below the current filters. Could you add one button for "advanced filtering options"?
As for cognitive load, this is a critical issue, I agree. The extent of cognitive load for possible filter displays and options could be well informed by beta testing. The cognitive load for those asking for more and or additional filters would certainly go down! Additional filters would also save a LOT of time (clear correlate to cognitive load).
I definitely agree to the point of multiple filters and multiple sorts.
Can SEX please be moved to a filter on the computer? It's already on the phone.
There ARE some GREAT "cascade" filter strategies on Searching Records, that also support multiple filters. This programming could also greatly benefit Temple Lists, especially for location (birth). This could also help solve the Family Lines issues, for me, as my four main family lines are from different places.
For Family Lines, could we somehow filter by "Related to {ID number}" (user enters the ID number) and have it filter to ancestors and their descendency?
Just trying to help based on hours and hours of working with filters on Temple Lists.
