Hi, it's me again :). I have been working on this project and since it's new to me I have another question. Based on the project instructions, I believe that I need to index the date by each individual if it was a complete date (month/day/year) and use the date located on the top or bottom of the page for all of the other names on the page. Is this correct?

In the instructions it states:

  • If more than 1 military date was given, use the earliest date.
  • The date at the top of a roster or roll may be used for all entries as the military date if the entries don't contain their own individual military dates.

So for this individual, Charles B Blakely, because he has a complete date by his name, I'd use this date when indexing him (9/7/29). For the other individuals on this document who do not have a complete date by their names, I'd use the date at the top of the page which is 10/31/1929?

The critical information that is consistent is the following. The rest is mostly noise.

Looking at these citations below, you will see that (a) an enlistment date is the first choice, but if one is not available, then (b) you fall back on the muster roll or monthly roster date if one is available. So, if you have an enlistment date you use it. If you don't, but you have a roll or roster date, you use it.

If you don't have an enlistment or roll or roster date, only then do you (c) look for other military dates. If you find multiple other such third-priority military dates, you choose the earliest of those as the Military Date for that soldier.

Here are the critical citations - which are consistent.

From What to Remember About This Project:

    • When multiple dates are present on the image, please choose the military date based on the following hierarchy:
    1. Enlistment date
    2. Muster roll or monthly roster date
    3. Any other applicable military date

From the Field Help for Military Month, Day, and Year

When multiple dates are present on the image, please choose the military (month, day, or year) based on the following hierarchy:

    1. Enlistment date
    2. Muster roll or monthly roster date
    3. Any other applicable military date

For that particular entry you would still use the roster date from the top of the page. If you check your field help you will find it states:

When multiple dates are present on the image, please choose the military month based on the following hierarchy:

    1. Enlistment date
    2. Muster roll or monthly roster date
    3. Any other applicable military date

This was from the field help for month. In the project instructions it gives the same advise. The date shown is not an enlistment date so you would use the roster date.

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you.

I read the field help and that is where I get confused. This list is also in the project guidelines. However, the confusion is because of "if the entries don't contain their own individual dates". I do over think things but because I am able to review, I want to be sure I am doing everything correctly. I am still confused why all of the directions, field helps and project guidelines, don't always match each other for each project.

Each record owner decides how their record collection will be indexed. This is why directions are not the same for each project.
