Wrong information in Pennsylvania Marriages, 1709 - 1940
The index to Pennsylvania Marriages, 1709 - 1940 has the marriage place for my gg-grandmother as Allentown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Film #008139160, E. Aug. Bauers Pastoral Records for Lutheran Church, Lehighton, Carbon County, Pennsylvania is the handwritten, primary source; there is no place of marriage listed, the bride's residence is West Penn (Schuylkill County), the groom's is Franklin (Township, Carbon County), the two townships bordering each other. Marriage in Allentown makes no geographical sense & if the marriage place isn't mentioned in the primary source, there should not be one in the Pennsylvania Marriages collection. Another marriage in the primary source for Alexander Staud and Mary Sold, both of Franklin Township, Carbon County, has Allentown as the marriage place. The error could be in the collection or in the indexing, but there is a definite error.
It seems that the indexes on this site cannot be trusted to accurately reflect primary sources. Until a robust, adequately staffed process for correcting errors is in place, I will only research on this site if the primary source is digitized and accessible.
