Italian birth records: No surname written with the child's, the father's and the mother's given name

In some Italian birth records, the child's surname is written with no surname, and the father's and the mother's names are written in the following manner: the father's/mother's given name + di + the paternal/maternal grandfather's given name and surname (example: Pietro di Luigi Caruso or Maria di Francesco Rossi).

The project instructions say, "do not assume a surname from the surnames of others mentioned in the document" and "type a surname for a person only if it was written with the person's given names," so should I leave the father's/mother's surname fields blank (to not assume), or should I write the surnames the way they are written on the document even if they include the child's grandfather's given name?

Can you give us the batch number of the project you are working with? The batch number is located in brackets at the name of the batch title. Then we can look at the batch with you and help determine what needs to be indexed. With the batch number we can also see if there are similar questions in the community for that project.

Thank you for helping Index. That helps so many find records about their ancestors.

Thank you so much for your response. I'm afraid my account type does not display the batch numbers (and it does not allow me to open any of of the submitted batches or review any of the indexed records either - I'm wondering if there's any way to remediate this). All I can see are the project names of the batches I've indexed: Italy (Italian Ancestors), Avellino—Civil Registration, 1866–1947 [Part 2R] and Italy (Italian Ancestors), Arezzo—Civil Registration, 1746–1864.

It would be of great help if you could guide me in this matter.

This gives directions on sharing your batch:

    Thank you, Dellory.

However, I don't seem to have that option either. All I can see are the project names and the count of indexed records. I can't open the shared batches because the system asks for the batch number, which my account doesn't display.

To open a shared batch, someone must first share their batch code with you. Example: M36L-MWL is my batch which I have checked out but not yet completed.

You must have one or more batches checked out to be able to share it. Example from my indexing start page is below. (But the image is delayed in posting so I hope you can see it soon.)

Because you are fairly new to indexing, I suggest watching these videos:

Here's an interview with Jason Pierson and discussion about indexing, including what's coming in the future.
