Part E][M3KC-P22]

Query on (parents names first entry)where there are two given names, the second one is definitely Elizabeth , but the first is difficult to say for sure possibly Ann?

There is a definite 'Ann' further down the page

Do mark the full field as unreadable or permissible to enter the second and put a question mark for the first?

Generally what is the procedure if you can read most of the name but unsure of a couple of letters?

Thanks for sharing your batch. The babies don't have surnames attached. They are given names, James Edward, Surname: <blank>

I think you would be safe to index given name: Elizabeth Ann.

You should not mark the fields unreadable. But, you can use "wildcards" when you are unsure of letters. You use a ? (question mark) for one letter and and * (asterisk) for multiple letters. You can read more about this in the General Indexing Guidelines at the end of the Project Instructions. There is a link to Unreadable Information.

    Hi,

In addition to Melissa's comments, I would add that we only specify sex when it is specifically mentioned i.e. "son of", "daughter of" etc. We never go on name only so all these children would have their sex marked as "blank". The first child's given names are James Edward, not just James. It is awful handwriting - so well done for tackling it!

    Hilary.
