Researching family from Dusseldorf (area) of Germany

I have documentation that indicates my great grandfather came from Dusseldorf Germany (or perhaps a surrounding town). I know his date of birth and I have his father's name as well. I've checked FamilySearch and Matricula already but cannot find record of him, or his parents. I'm wondering what suggestions people have for how I can best proceed, whether through a paid or free service.

Post-1875, you'd be wanting to find civil registration/vital records. Some are online, some are not: you should contact the local archive and inquire about access. Pre-1875, church records are the main source. Both Catholic and Protestant records can be found in the FamilySearch Catalog. Some Catholic records can be found at Matricula, and the majority of Protestant records are now online at archion.de ($).
