Indexing is transcribing vital records, census records and other historical records to make a digital record so the original document can be searchable in the familysearch.org data bases. You are doing work for others when you do this work. It helps you understand historical records so when you look for information on your relatives you can find the information easier because you know where to look for the information. Indexing is easy to do, if you know cursive handwritting you are someone we need indexing. The youth are not taught cursive handwriting and they can't read the records.

Most records are handwritten and so they need to be indexed! The development of the typewriter helped but you had to have money to afford them. Many places didn't have the money so they hand wrote the land deeds, marriage records, Birth Records and so forth by hand. Census records like the 1950 census coming out may be handwritten. The links above show you how to get started indexing.
