companies and trusts
Please give many examples of how people representing companies, and many examples of people involved in trusts, are listed in U.S. Massachusetts - Boston Tax Records, 1822-1918 (Part L), so they will not be indexed. I'm tired of wondering if I'm eliminating the wrong people or including the wrong people!

I don't have an answer, but, I have question! Why are they not indexing names in Trusts? Trusts are organized for ordinary, everyday people to hold their assets. Their tax records then show the name of the trust. Not all trusts are nominee trusts. I hope a moderator will get an answer on this from headquarters and also share your idea @CJBield . I'll tag a few soon, if one doesn't respond.

I looked at the PI to make sure, but it does say to not index trusts.
- Index all names except those listed in the "Owner" or "Remarks" columns, or names of companies or trusts. Often, names of owners appear on the right side of the image; these names should not be indexed.

This is basically the same question I was asking on the question I posted. Mackenzie & Campbell appears to be a company name but how do we really know?
Obviously this is not an answer just more question???

The PI also says to index every unique name, so under the "company" banner, does that mean something like Mackenzie & Cook or does it mean something like "Cook Brothers"?

Hi @Melissa S Himes , @erutherford , @CJBield -- Here's a possible answer based on my 25 yrs of U.S. tax preparation & 4 years as a paralegal & the PI: 1) Do not index the Name of the Trust or the Company however a trust has executors, treasurer, etc in my example: John Jones Trust, treas. Wm Hayes --- index the name Wm Hayes and any other unique names listed ie; Judy Jones - she is probably a beneficiary, not the owner of the trust 2) Mackenzie & Cook is a company with employees who do the accounting/bookkeping so index it like this: surname Mackenzie given name <Blank>. Likewise the name Cook. Also index any other unique name listed as an officer of the company ie; John Doe, pres. or Jane Doe, secty.

Thanks, I understand that as I am also involved in trusts. But, based on these instructions, they are missing names on trusts that would be beneficial in FamilySearch research. As in your example, let us say that John Jones has put his real estate in his trust (The John Jones Trust) and Judy Jones is the beneficiary. Wouldn't it be nice for the researcher to be able to find John and see the property he owns, and also be guided to the image to see that Wm Hayes and Judy are involved?
With the current instructions, you wouldn't index Mackenzie & Cook at all since it is the name of a company and you wouldn't index John Jones.
Under the rules as cut and pasted by erutherford: "Index all names ... except names of companies or trusts. This needs to be clarified if it is indeed as you suggest to index the owners Mackenzie & Cook. Currently, these names are going to be missed. Quite possibly all the names under a trust will also be missed since there aren't any examples or clear instructions.

@PiperTWilson Here is what I was talking about in my post about "who is moderating". This is the kind of discussion that the moderators need to move along to "headquarters" so they can read the recommendation that began the post. They also need to give some definitive, final answers about the instructions not to index company names and trusts, or the instructions need to be changed.

Mackenzie & Campbell, Carpenters & Builders, 77 and 79 Wareham Street, Boston. All kinds of Doors, Panel Work, Wash-Stands, Drawer-Cases, Etc., Made to Order (Ad from the Boston Directory, 1877).
- Project Instructions: Index all names except those listed in the "Owner" or "Remarks" columns, or names of companies or trusts. Often, names of owners appear on the right side of the image; these names should not be indexed.
