Other Genealogy Websites - Do they connect?

Hello,

I have been having a lot of fun researching my family roots here but am getting stuck with some of the family. I noticed there are other Genealogy websites (Anscestry.com, etc.) - if I use some of these other sites - do they all connect to FamilySearch.org? How does that work to combine information found?

What are some of your favorite other sites to use to try to find missing pieces of the family puzzle?? Seems like most sites charge so if I'm going to pay, want to here what others think... I also use 23andme - but mostly used that to find out about my DNA.. Not so much for researching family records.

Thanks!

It all depends on what you are looking for. Websites such as Ancestry.com, FindMyPast and MyHeritage focus on historical records. They are of use to you only if they have records from the time/place you are looking for. The FamilySearch Wiki is a good place to look to find out where to get records. You can also ask here and someone with experience in the time/place you are researching will be able to help.

If you are a Latter Day Saint, you get partial free subscriptions to most of the major commercial websites. Many public libraries have free subscriptions. Ancestry.com and MyHeritage also allow you to build a personal family tree which LDS members can sync to the FSFT.
