Mispelled names, or not?

This happens rarely but its happened recently to me and so here I am.

When do we decide to index what is there vs what we think should be there? I came across the name, "Geroge". To me it looks like it should have been "George". I wound up putting, "Geroge or George"

Others have been, "Willaim", "Cahrles" , "Hwoard" and others similar. What should I do?

@Colin Yamamoto_1 Ok I know someone will come along with a more knowledgeable explanation but here goes: Our general indexing guidelines tell us to index what we see only changing something that has been changed by the people that recorded the information if it is shown on the page. There are projects that I have run into that will tell you in the instructions to index information, when you're not sure about the spelling of a name with 'or' as you have done, but otherwise I think we are to adhere to indexing "what we see."

I hope this helps. Keep indexing and thank you for your question.

Check your NAME field helps, but, they probably say type the name as written. Do not correct misspellings or expand abbreviations. (I haven't seen one that didn't.)

So, you type the name as it is written. Or is used for name variations, nicknames, aliases, etc. on the document. It is not used to indicate that you, as an indexer or reviewer, think the scribe made a mistake.
