Phonetic Pronunciation
I have been attending the temple frequently the past several months. I have noticed on many occasions that patrons struggle with name pronunciation on names that are foreign to English. Would it be possible or feasible to add a phonetic spelling under foreign names?
Just an idea...

I suppose there's really nothing stopping you from adding an Alternate Name written out in the International Phonetic Alphabet....

And, just so that you are aware ...
'Mary' is referring to, being at a "Temple"; and, undertaking "Temple" Work.
The problem/issue, that 'Mary' particularly refers to, is doing the Work, that had been "Shared with the Temple System", by another User/Patron, rather doing the Work for one's own Ancestors.
I myself; being BOTH, a Patron to a "Temple", doing Work, that has been "Shared with the Temple System", on behalf of another User/Patron; and/or, as a Worker in a "Temple", working with the other Patrons, for their Ancestors, have often 'struggled', with the pronunciation of the "Name", on "Temple" Cards, that are not my native language.
And, I totally, understand; where, 'Mary' is coming from.
Those, whose Work, has been "Shared with the Temple System", previously, were retained and done, in the "Temple" District, of the User/Patron who shared them ...
Nowadays; as, some "Temple" Districts, had a backlog of Work to be done ...
The Work, for those, whose Work, has been "Shared with the Temple System", goes into a "Generic" Pool.
As such, the Work may be done, at ANY "Temple", anywhere around the World.
Hence, the reason for this post.
I know, that you have no interest in the mechanics, I just though this may help you understand this post.
[ ie. NO chance/ability to ADD an "Alternate Name"; which, by the way, will have NO bearing, in this matter ... ]
[ As, "Alternate Names", DO NOT, appear on the "Temple" Cards (and, should NOT) ... ]

Although I am not a member of the LDS Church, I fully understand your desire to be respectful by not saying an unfamiliar name incorrectly whilst carrying out work at the Temple. However, I believe that in many cases you would never know the accurate pronunciation of an individual's name - at least how they would have spoken it.
To give an example, here in England there are two brothers who often appear on television. Their surname is spelled POWELL, yet one brother pronounces it as "pole" and the other as "powl".
There would also be the situation of names for which the pronunciation is different in the United States to how it is in the person's (or their ancestors') native country. Take the names of BRAUN (pronounced "brown" in Germany, I believe) and similarly WAGNER (pronounced "vargner").
Another problem lies with the actual adding of a phonetic spelling. Would you want it written in the manner I have illustrated, or as a dictionary may record it - with phonetic "symbols"? Personally, when I look at the phonetic pronunciation as illustrated in some dictionaries, I am still none the wiser on how the word / name should be spoken!
Whilst I empathise with your problem, I must repeat that I feel you would still not necessarily be assured that you were saying the name as the individual would have spoken it themself, even if your idea was to be adopted.

As, a Worker in a "Temple", working with the other Patrons, for their Ancestors
▬ I often, "Ask", the Patron, in advance/to start with, the way they would pronounce the "Name"
▬ And, I apologise in advance ...
▬ As, my version, of the "pronunciation"; STILL, oft, 'leaves a lot to be desired' ...
▬ Patrons, just appreciate, you making the effort; and, for the Service that you are providing ...
Whereas ...
As, to being a Patron, to a "Temple", doing Work, that has been "Shared with the Temple System", on behalf of another User/Patron; when/where, there is NO ONE there to "Ask"; WELL, you can only do, the best you can.
NO ONE will fault you, in either case ...
But ...
That Said ...
When it comes to "Temple" Work ...
We ALL like (and, strive) to do the RIGHT thing ...
That is just ... human nature ...
As, I have already suggested ... we can ONLY do our best ...

Would placing a temporary sticky notes on Temple Cards that have the phonetic pronunciation written out be acceptable?
Non-Spanish speaking people saying Spanish names would be able to approximate the names better and maybe speak louder with more confidence. English speaking people would be given a clue as to how to say the Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Arabic ... names without necessarily knowing how to say or pronounce the individual characters.
This suggestion would create more work in Temple Card preparation, perhaps requiring access to a computer.
