While working on British Parrish registers many of which are from the late 1800s I have seen the "fs" combination several times. Here is a example.

Does this index as "Crofs" or "Cross"? -Thanks, Roger Castle

"Come on, Ben. Just sign the petition."

"Hold on, Tom, let me look it over. .....when in courfe o human eventfs.."

"That's 'in course of human events!'

"Oh, but all your s's look like f's"

"Well it in. It's very in."

Fun. The double s "fs" is indexed as an ss. In this case Cross.

It sounds like it's time for the "long s" examples - with some abbreviations thrown in for free.
