Specifying Updates to Record Collections

Hi all,

The records on FamilySearch are regularly updated, with new records or indexes. My suggestion is to create a system that helps researchers quickly understand if an update to a collection would be relevant to their objectives. FindmyPast has blog posts released every Friday detailing what new collections and dates have been added within the last week, and can be considered a good model for what I'm describing, though FamilySearch could attempt something more simpler. Many of the collections I look at have not been indexed and/or are not comprehensive, and while the collections are updated every few months it's hard to tell whether those updates are relevant to my interests.

    @AdrianaHazelton

    I have argued the same point for several years. I use a website at https://www.durhamrecordsonline.com/index.php?q=1&cookiecheck=1 where the exact details are given as to what has been added. With FamilySearch, we have no idea if the material added (say for a collection relating to an English county) applies to a parish for which no records have been previously available on FamilySearch, for certain events (baptisms, marriages or burials) or specific time periods.

    FamilySearch must keep logs of the newly added material (whether indexed or just images) so should be able to make life easier for us by sharing this detail with its users. I have wasted many hours in trying to identify whether the new records have any use in my research. I recently discovered the "new records" reported as being "added to an existing collection" were ones that had been withdrawn some months previously, then merely being added back again!
