re-enlistment date recorded by a name

United States—Enlisted and Officer Muster Rolls and Rosters, 1916–1939 [Part N]

[M3J6-5WM]

If there is a re-enlistment date recorded by a name, do I use that date or the one at the top saying last day of Feb 1918. I am pretty sure I would use the date if it was an "enlistment date" but not sure about the "re-enlistment" date.

    The instructions state:

    • The date at the top of a roster or roll may be used for all entries as the military date if the entries don't contain their own individual military dates.
    • When multiple dates are present on the image, please choose the military date based on the following hierarchy:
    1. Enlistment date
    2. Muster roll or monthly roster date
    3. Any other applicable military date

I tried to check the batch but got a restricted message so was unable to see exactly what you were looking at. If both enlistment dates are available you should use the earliest date. If only the reenlistment date is available that would be the first choice for a date.

    Hope that helps.

Do I understand this correctly? If the comment by the name says, re-enlisted 14 Jan, do I use that date rather than the roster date at the top? Would I add the year at the top of the roster to the 14 Jan?

I was unsure if the "re" enlistment date applied to the same rule as just the initial enlistment date.

One of the instructions state that if it is an incomplete date, which apparently this is, use the complete date from the top of the page. Sorry if I had been able to open the batch I would have seen that.

Hope I have it right now.

Thank you. My big concern is when there is NOT a date at the top at all. The first line at the top will be like this:

John Doe re-enlisted 14 Oct Notes about what his titles have been, etc. Transferred to Unit ?

    Tom Short 15 Oct 1918

    Jeff White 15 Oct 1918

If there is a date at the top such as "of the last day of Oct 1918" - would I put the re-enlisted date in place of 31 Oct 1918.

If it doesn't give the year with the re enlistment date I would use the roster date for that person and then use the enlistment dates for the others. Normally you can find the roster date using the reference images if it is not on the page you are working on.

Thank you for your patience. I did not know there was the possibility of looking at a previous page. I will try that next time.

I had sent a question about this on this site about 2 hours before and no one replied and I got the message that my connection has expired. Thank you for picking up my question.

I will have to try and reword it different next time as I still am not getting a clear answer in my "tiny" brain.

Janet, I just answered that question on the other thread. We use the re-enlistment date. Sorry for not being quicker!

In summary then, please confirm the following for "Monthly Roster" US, Missouri, St. Louis—Military Records, 1916–1939[M9NK-HP4]

Under "Enlistment Date" I would use the date of the monthly roster unless a more specific date is listed under the name of the individual. For all names without specific dates I would use the Monthly Roster Date. If however there was a death date such as 28 Feb (without the year listed, but since the monthly roster is dated 1926 I can assume it was 28 Feb 1926).

    IS THAT CORRECT?

@John Empoliti would a death date fall under #5 in the priority list?

    Hi @erutherford

The original question of this thread concerns this project: United States—Enlisted and Officer Muster Rolls and Rosters, 1916–1939, where below is the guidance (Field Help) on the "Military Date" fields:

When multiple dates are present on the image, please choose the military month based on the following hierarchy:

    1. Enlistment date

    2. Muster roll or monthly roster date

    3. Any other applicable military date

If more than 1 enlistment date was given, use the earliest date.

The question you're asking seems to concern the other military project: US, Missouri, St. Louis—Military Records, 1916–1939, where below is the guidance (Field Help) on the "Enlistment Date" fields. I suppose that if a soldier, sailor, or Marine died while on duty, it would be reasonable to consider that an event covered under priority #5. It would help to see an example, to be sure.

Many types of events may have been recorded. In the enlistment fields, type information only about the following events, according to this priority list. (If multiple events were mentioned, use the one highest in the priority list.)

    1. Date of enlistment.

    2. Date of events indicated by words such as "appointed," "mustered," or "inducted."

    3. Date of discharge or retirement.

    4. Date when a roll was taken or roster was created.

    5. Date when the soldier or sailor was wounded.

If multiple dates were recorded and you cannot determine if a date refers to one of the events in the above priority list, type the earliest date. The earliest date is typically closest to the date of first enlistment.
