US, Illinois, Monroe County—Deed Records, 1816–1900 [M3JJ-Q2F]
- The instructions say to "Index all land registers and records with names of grantors, grantees, or other names".
Some names listed in the Deed are not Grantors or Grantees. Do I index those names, and if so how do you index those names without a space to put their name? Thanks!

here are couple of the biggest names on here, as well as annewandering, who is a mod. If this ping doesnt work and they dont get notified, maybe you could try messaging them directly. I would hate to see your question fade to the 2nd or 3rd pages without being answered.
They are always helpful and answer a bunch of questions per day on the forum. Just select their name and theres an option to 'Message' beside 'View Profile', above their discussions and comments totals, and badges.

Hi.
Briefly - the person conveying the property is the “Grantor” whether or not he or she is called a Grantor. Likewise, the person receiving the property is the “Grantee” whether called that in the document. Those are the “other names” I think the instruction means. If names are mentioned but those persons not conveying or receiving property, then they don’t get indexed. Look at the last Project Instruction example where I don’t think you see the words Grantor and Grantee.
I’ll revisit this tomorrow.

The last example is a good one for this type of record. The first person listed in the margin is giving something to the second person. Additionally there are wives involved. I think you were spot on with the first image and you create a second entry for the wives. I think these land records all had that instruction to create a separate entry for each party involved. This one seems to be missing that, but, the wives are still parties to the transactions!
On image 2, since it appears to be individuals and a company I would only index the individuals and leave the grantee fields blank based on these instructions:
- Do not index the grantee or grantor if a company, government organization, or other such groups were listed. Index only the names of individuals granting or receiving the land from the company or organization. Do not index phrases or abbreviations included with the name, such as "By the Treasury (By Treas)," "et ux," or "et al."
- When a company or government organization was listed as the grantor or grantee, mark the respective field blank and index any other information on the line. If both the grantee and grantor were companies or government officials, skip the entry, and index the next entry with names of individuals.
Wait for John to revisit though - he's done alot of these deed projects.

Hi Melissa. Thanks for taking a deeper dive into @KParsons ’ batch. I don’t have anything to add to your great amplification of my brief comment.
For the “record” I haven’t worked on any of the deed projects. I have done a great many of the land records projects over the years (e.g. lately US, New York, Erie—Index to Land Records, Grantors, 1630–1975). They have some similarities to the deed projects (e.g., Grantors/ Grantees). But, especially narrative-style documents like those in this batch are not common if seen at all. And the rules/ instructions here seem more complicated, perhaps because of the existence of the latter, somewhat unstructured types of documents. Still, I thought that the instructions could/ should have been clearer on this issue.
However, with my background in land record projects, I felt comfortable enough to dig into the deed project instructions and examples to try to help out, as I think you often do - even on projects we don’t regularly work on.

In the batch I am doing of Monroe Co, Illinois Deed Records there are several names listed of previous owners of the property. One appears to be the wife's father, as it gives her maiden name which is the same. It also gives the name of a man who sold the property to the father.
- In the project help it says this, "Index all land registers and records with names of grantors, grantees, or other names."
- So would this count as "other names," and should they also be indexed? Would they be listed as grantors?
- It makes sense that those names might be helpful for researchers looking for more information about the people in the record. But I am not sure what to do. I suppose it would not be a problem to include all those names.
