Batch M369-SZ4 (First Entry) First and Last Names do not make sense. I have been entering them as is but maybe they entered the Fathers names in reverse. Does anyone have an answer? Maybe that is how they do it in Sierra Leone in some areas.

I have only done one batch on this project, but this page looks to me like the first child has the mother's last name. On a number of other entries both parents have the same last name, same as the child's. For the others the child has the father's last name. Have fun with the deciphering!

    Hi Harmon, James Bartlett

I have worked some on this project and just checked the batch you are working on. Some times the names seem obvious but as you noted the names from some areas are confusing. I have not lived in Sierra Leone, but I have lived in countries where the child takes the fathers first name as their Surname. Another issue is that their clan designations are included in the same area as the name and sometimes it is difficult to tell where the name stops and the clan begins.

my advise is read the project instructions and field helps carefully . When I cannot tell which it is, given or surname, I follow the guideline which states:

    • If you cannot determine whether a name is a given name or a surname, type it in the Given Names field.

I noted that you had. marked many fields Blank. The information is all there, check the column headings.

If you are not comfortable with the batch it is all right to return it.

    Good luck with your indexing
