Hi - On Family Search, I have found the Irish document reference for one spouse in a marriage. How can I use the document reference to find the other spouse in this marriage (name unknown)? How do I formulate the search on Family Search?

Thanks,

Valerie

There are multiple references on FamilySearch for Irish civil registration. Your link is to the index - just a page of names and places with no other detail. There is also a database of the extract of the marriage - this URL - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QGVD-HVNC - which shows the name of John's father, the name of his wife, the name of her father, and the full date - 28 February 1865 - of their wedding.

On irishgenealogy.ie, you can see the handwritten register page which also includes the names of their witnesses, place of the marriage, and other details. If you have not used that site before, you will need to sign in, possibly solve a Captcha, but there is no fee, no password, and the site does not keep your log-in info. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1865/11564/8254190.pdf

The images for Irish civil registration are not available on FamilySearch, but you can find them, free, on

This is the URL for the page that comes up:

John Ashmore, "Ireland Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958" • FamilySearch

How can I use this info to find who his wife was? It doesn't come on the search listing - only his name appears (no father, no spouse, no "other".

    Thanks :)

Just to clarify my comment about the URL to the index page. This is an example of what an Irish civil registration index looks like. This happens to be a death index, but the format for a marriage index is the same. There is a 2nd index for the names of brides. This: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FYMJ-PW1 - which shows the same volume number, making it easier to confirm it is the same couple/marriage. Those old indexes were compiled quarterly and were a finding aid for the record in the days before computer searches.

Some additional detail: There is a separate index for brides, showing the same volume number - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FYMJ-PW1 which helps show that it is the same record.

The index you found might be considered a finding aid, with basic details to help find the full record, in the days before computer searches.
