Accessing books on site
Hi,
I live in North Carolina and am trying to get my hands on a copy of a book that details the history/genealogy of one part of my family. There appear to be copies scattered around at different location but, due to copyright restrictions, nothing is available for purchase on line.
It looks like there is a copy available at the Family History Center in SLC and I am planning to be there on vacation for a couple of days in late May, 2022. My questions are as follows:
- Can I just show up during normal operating hours and get access to the physical copy of the book?
- Is it possible to make copies of parts of the book while on site and take them with me for review and research later?
Thanks!

@ChrisLemmons1 Not sure if your original question was answered. Looking at the catalog page for the book:
It shows that the physical copy of the book is not available. BUT, the library has a microfilm copy of the book that you would be able to access at the Family History Library when you visit. It is Item 3 on film 1320981. You can request to view the physical microfilm when you are at the library. The "Item 3" part of the catalog entry can be confusing. It lets you know that 2 other digitized books are going to be before the book you want to look at when you start scrolling through the film. Usually you can spot the beginning of each "item" by an image of a book cover.

Hi This link is to Salt Lake look up service who will be able to help you as to whether they have a copy of your book etc.
Hope this helps.

@ChrisLemmons1 I would love to know the name of the book. There are MANY places online which have books. I have found numerous books in Ancestry where the full text is available, yet FamilySearch has it restricted due to copyright. Also Google books will sometimes have full text available. What is your book?

Hi Gail,
The name of the books is:
In search of Jacob Lehman (Lemmon) of Frederick County, Maryland and Harrison County, Kentucky
Title No - 484362
Creator - McMurtry, David Cornelius, 1920-; Conrad, John B. (John Browning), 1920-
I have done some searching for an online copy of this book and have not found it. If you have other sources that would be great to check out. It does show up on this site if you search the books and I believe they have a hard copy.
They have a copy of the book at a couple of libraries in Kentucky which I have tried to get using the inter-library loan process of my local library. However, none of them appear to loan out genealogical books.
Thanks!

You are correct. I can find no books available online to view and none to buy! That is such a shame. The copyright in these cases renders the authors' book almost inaccessible. Not quite what was intended.

Thanks to all of you that responded. It is much appreciated. I will follow up on the leads you have provided. FWIW, I recently visited the cemetery in Harrison County, KY where several of my relatives presumably listed in this book reside. It was a very cool experience and provided information on other families that married into the Lehman/Lemmon for me to check out.
