Is use of Pvt to designate military rank appropriate in the title field of a person's name
Someone has changed the name of my Uncle to have Pvt in the title field for his name. He was indeed in the military in WWII. I am pretty sure he was not still a Private when he was discharged. Is it appropriate to use that designation in the title field?

@nanettej In regard to the appropriateness of adding a military rank, we suggest you contact the person who contributed that information and inquire as to their source. In the Help Center use search term how to contact other contributors, or use this link How do I send a message to someone who contributed to Family Tree or Memories? If there are sources indicating that was his correct rank, then the rank may be added in the prefect field.

There aren't any hard and fast rules about what should or shouldn't go in the title field under Vitals, but given that it is in the Vitals section, I would typically only put in an inherited, lifelong title, not a temporary or variable one like "Private". A military rank could go in Other Information, either as part of the description for a "Military Service" event, or as a "Custom Fact".

I imagine you have already used the Military Service section of Other Information for some records. This section is not just for attached sources, you might have your own family knowledge that you could record here. You can add information yourself to clarify existing events too, such as: Description of Military Service: Training. Date: From Jun 1943 to Aug 1943 Private in Infantry. Location: Camp Atterbury, Indiana. Reason This Information Is Correct: Part of service record: See [ref. to original source document]
Using the Other Information section of a person record in this way adds additonal steps to your ancestor's timeline so you can see their progress through a series of events that might not be expanded in the source.

The following article gives some information on adding a name different from the original. The designation PVT should be added to "other information" field. Please read the information in the article below. Putting PVT in the name category could cause problems.
