Listen to users, don't preach to them
You write
"The new page has shown that it provides a better experience in these tests"
and
"I hear a lot of feedback asking to go back to the old search page"
Notice any inconsistency there?
Whether the new page is better is for users to say, not you. Please listen to your expert users, and don't just tell us we're wrong.

I am just a researcher, long in the tooth, but with exactly the same point of view. You have condensed all my feelings and concerns into a succinct suggestion. I commend you. I urge all others who feel the same to upvote this idea and let's give this guy some more stars.
