There used to be a tool for indexing in which I would enter the legible letters of a name in order to find what the full name might be. I have searched everywhere and cannot find the tool nor any information about it. Has it been removed?

They don't have a list of names that comes up when you type for person names anymore. Some projects do for place names, but not person names. But what I do is go to Family Search and enter the name (with the ? and * symbols for unreadable letters), put in a place name, and see what comes up. Sometimes once you see a name you can "see" those letters in the name on your document.
