Witnesses on marriage records

I am indexing marriage records from Ireland. The index asks for groom's father and mother, and bride's father and mother. These are not specified on the record but there are "witnesses" with the same surnames as the groom and bride. Can/should I assume that these are the parents? I am thinking no, but thought I should ask.

Never assume anything when Indexing. Type what you see.

If you're doing Catholic marriages, then don't expect to see the name of parents mentioned. Witnesses are often siblings of the bride and groom.
