give me an example of an overlay that may be visible underneath the image that is to be indexed.

    An overlay would be a piece of paper over another document. For example, someone puts a post-it note on top of a birth certificate with a note written on it. You would index the information on the post-it note if it applied to the project, but you wouldn't index the information on the birth certificate. Usually the next image will have the birth certificate image with the overlay flipped over or removed. Then you would index the full birth certificate.
