why is a relationship is not showing correctly?
ok, Lady Jean Fleming, L4M9-3K2, is the mother of my My 13th great-grandfather James Muirhead 6th of Lauchope, L8BV-2FL, the "show relationship' should show her as my 14th great grandmother, right? It does not. it says she is my My 3rd cousin eleven times removed. I know it only shows back 15 generations. but since it is showing a relationship, should it not show that she is my 14th great grandmother since it gets her son correct? This is not the only place this happens, it seems to happen quite frequently lately.

Hi Kathy
I think you hit the nail on the head when you pointed out you can only display 15 generations up, and 15 back down. If Lady Jean's son is your 13th great grandfather, it would be 16 generations to her if you were to go directly to her. I think a 13th great grandfather is 15 generations up.
So instead it looks like it showed you a path it computed as a 3rd cousin, 11 times removed because it could display it without exceeding 15 generations. Your common ancestor is 15 generations up, and then 4 down.
Please check my counting here, but I think that is what may have been happening.
Thanks
Scott

I don't know exactly - but 'show relationship' probably tries to show the shortest relationship. It should show the line/path that it is taking to get to 3rd cousin 11 times removed. Is this path correct?
I would think as you that if the person were a grandparent - in the direct line - it would show that relation first.

More relationship paths can be seen using the partner site RelativeFinder.org.

that shows we are not related at all!

Sounds like someone else is working on that part of the tree and in the process removed one or more connecting relationships that were not supported and perhaps were in error.
