Can a wrong photo be removed from Family Search?
Yesterday I tried exploring “Family History Activities” on Family Search, which was interesting and enjoyable. When I opened the “Missionaries” section, I saw mission information for my 2nd great-grandfather, Charles Root Dana (1802-1868) KWJH-VVV. The only problem was that the picture shown for him is not a picture of Charles Root Dana—it is a picture of his son, George Carlos Dana (1842-1912) KWN1-3P7.
That was an email that I composed this morning to send to Family Search, but when I looked for a way to send it, I couldn’t find one. I called the FS Support phone number and explained my problem to a representative. When she went to “Activities” she could not find the topic “Missionaries” until she had logged in as me, using my username and helper number. When she got to Charles Root Dana, I explained the problem about the picture, and said that if I clicked on “View Missionary” which would take me to the Church History Biographical Database, there was no picture for him there. [Since I had written about this problem before, apparently someone had removed the picture that used to be there.] Unfortunately it still shows up under Activities>Missionaries.
I told the support person that the only place that the picture shows up in “Memories” for Charles Root Dana was in a story about his son, George Carlos Dana, which does include information about the father (hence the tag). She thought that since his was the first name to have been tagged, it might explain how the picture showed up as the missionary picture of C R Dana. She tried removing the tag but it did not make a difference to the problem we were trying to solve.
She then tried talking with her supervisor who basically told her nothing could be done. She then suggested that I present the problem in the Q and A section of “Community” in the hope that someone might have a solution. So here I am.
It is distressing that this inaccuracy persists. Even though this particular page in Activities can only be seen by descendants of Charles Root Dana (or probably also non-descendants who are somehow related) that group includes a great many people. It probably won’t be long until the photo finds its way onto Ancestry or Find-a-Grave or other genealogy websites and then there will be no containing it!
